The Yard Milkshake Bar Coming to Baton Rouge

March 11, 2021 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

The Yard Milkshake Bar milkshakes will surely bring us all to the yard when they open their first Louisiana location in Highland Park Marketplace! The opening date for The Yard isn’t known yet, but they’re coming! The dessert chain is based around a variety of specialty milkshakes and sundaes in collectible Mason jars. Customers can also build their own milkshakes from a long list of ice cream flavors, adding to it their choice of toppings, perhaps even a scoop of edible cookie dough.

The Yard Milkshake Bar

The Yard Milkshake Bar

Created by husband-and-wife team Logan and Chelsea Green. They both came from families of entrepreneurs and spent their early years working for their parents. In 2011 Chelsea and her mother started their first ice cream shop, Island Ice Cream, which Chelsea still owns today.

If The Yard sounds familiar to some people, that’s because they may have seen it on TV. Founders Logan and Chelsea Green pitched the company on an episode of ABC’s “Shark Tank” that aired in November 2019.

They opened in May of 2017 and were blown away by the community’s positive reaction in their hometown of Gulf Shores, AL. They have now expanded to Panama City Beach, FL, Fairhope, AL, Austin, TX, and soon Louisiana!

The Yard Milkshake Bar

COOKIE DOUGH THAT IS ACTUALLY SAFE TO EAT RAW

Do you love digging into the cookie dough before baking it?!?!  The Yard Milkshake Bar creates yummy cookie doughs that you don’t have to worry about consuming raw. Eat it at room temperature or cold to satisfy the child within. No need to worry about getting sick from raw eggs again. They don’t have eggs in their dough, and their flour is heat-treated.

We think it’s safe to say that many are excited and ready to welcome The Yard Milkshake Bar to Baton Rouge from the reaction we received from our Facebook share.

Hot chocolate bombs are the newest holiday trend this season, and with good reason! Sold out at most big box stores and made viral on TikTok, hot chocolate bombs have become a bit elusive and hard to find online and at stores. Suddenly in high demand, DIY’s are popping up all over social media, and local bakery shops are quickly jumping in to fill the Hot Cocao Bomb needs!  We’ve put together a list of local makers so you can get your Hot Chocolate Bombs in Baton Rouge!

What are hot chocolate bombs?

Hot chocolate bombs — or hot cocoa bombs — are spheres of decadent chocolate filled with cocoa mix and lots of mini marshmallows. You pour steaming hot milk over the bomb and watch them melt away, exposing the marshmallows and coca mix inside. (See the video below.)

Where to find hot chocolate bombs in Baton Rouge and beyond.

Local bakeries quickly started filling the need with some of them offering special flavors, and of course, some are holiday-themed.

DIY Hot Cocoa Bomb Recipe

First, you need to purchase two silicone circular or spherical molds.

Ingredients

  • Melting chocolate/chips of your choice.
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Toppings – crushed candy canes, sprinkles, chocolate drizzle, etc…

Directions

  1. Melt your chocolate chips by microwaving them in a bowl for 30 seconds, stirring, then continuing to heat at 15-second intervals.
  2. Spread the chocolate so that it covers the mold with a thin coating of chocolate
  3. Let the chocolate harden in the refrigerator or the freezer if you’re in a hurry.
  4. Once hardened, fill your mold three-fourths full with your hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows.
  5. Cover with the top shell to seal the bombs. (you may need to use some melted chocolate to “seal” your shell.) Add toppings. Place mold in the fridge until the chocolate sets.
  6. Place your hot cocoa bomb in a mug and pour hot milk over the bomb. Stir until completely melted.

The story of the Messenger’s Christmas Land starts over 50 years ago with Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Messenger Jr. and their 9 kids. With just a few lights and home made animated scenes, word quickly spread about the unusual display for the public. The original location was at the Messenger’s home in Red Oaks, Baton Rouge and then relocated in 1992 to Plantation Estates, Denham Springs where Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Messenger III took over for the next 21 years. Now, going on 53 years, this family tradition can still be visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Messenger off Prince Charles Street, Denham Springs. With lights everywhere, home made animated scenes, a timeline, and even the north pole, the display continues to open every Christmas season to all of the public with no charge. Come stop by and be apart of this 53 year Christmas tradition.

Giving Tuesday Baton Rouge and Beyond – 225 Gives

November 29, 2020 by Tiany Davis

Baton Rouge Family Fun was created to support families in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Our hope has always been that as we with the hope that we could find ways to collectively give back to the place we call home. Last year we started a series “Baton Rouge Gives Back” when many of you asked for ways to help and volunteer right here in our community.

Today is Giving Tuesday #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that brings people together around the values of service and giving back to others, the perfect time to bring back our Baton Rouge Gives Back series where we highlight local nonprofits. 225 Gives.

Our local Giving Tuesday effort, 225 Gives highlights local nonprofit organizations who uplift and strengthen our community. As part of our series, we will be hosting a “225 Gives” takeover across our website and our social media platforms. Throughout the day, we will highlight some of the organizations taking part in this year’s “225 Give”. You can also go to 225gives.org to learn more about the participating organizations!

225 GIVES, presented by Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) and Capital Area United Way (CAUW), is a 24-hour online giving day taking place December 1, 2020 with a one week early giving period set to open on Tuesday, November 24th. 225 GIVES has set a goal of helping generate over $4,225,000 for area nonprofits. This powerful online fundraising initiative will unite the Capital Region in support of the nonprofit community.

225 Gives

This holiday season and throughout the year we can make a difference right here at home by giving and or volunteering.  There are over 100 nonprofit organizations to support in the Baton Rouge area. Make it a family effort, go through the list of organizations, and ask the kids who they would like to support and why. There is no better way to teach our children that we value our community and our neighbors than by giving back as a family.

Collectively, we can strive to make a difference in the lives of those in need; our efforts will in turn help create a stronger, healthier Baton Rouge for all! Join your neighbors today and become part of a growing tradition of helping and giving. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to learn more about this year’s 225 Gives Baton Rouge participants!

⭐ 7:30-10 p.m. – OBJECT: Saturn
The ringed beauty will be seen. Try to spy the Cassini Division, the largest gap in the planet’s ring system. (9.7 astronomical units / magnitude 0.5)

⭐ 7:57-8 p.m. – EVENT: Visible Pass of an H-IIA Rocket Body
Part of a Japanese launch system, this piece of space junk should be visible under the correct conditions. Here’s to hoping we have them. (distance 534 kilometers / magnitude 1.7)

⭐ 8-8:15 p.m. – ACTIVITY: The Magnitude Scale
HRPO personnel will explain what the magnitude scale is, and then will ultilize the stars Vega, Fomalhaut, Polaris and Albireo to illustrate how dim stars get as one progresses down the ladder of the scale. (distances 25, 25, 431 and 385 light-years respectively / magnitudes 0.0, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.2 respectively)

⭐ 8-10 p.m. – EVENT: Ganymede Transits in Front of Jupiter
The largest moon in the Solar System must have known about this night’s celebration. It will give a memorable show by orbiting in front of its parent planet. (Ganymede magnitude 4.9)

⭐ 8:15-8:30 p.m – STORY: Great Square of Pegasus
As Pegasus the Winged Horse rises in the east, you’ll hear a story recounted about this majestic mythological creature. (distance of four corners 97 to 335 light-years / magnitudes of four corners 2.0 to 2.8)

⭐ 8:15-9 p.m. – OBJECT: The Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31)
The closest spiral to our own Milky Way is rising high while twilight is ending. Sadly, the local light pollution only allows a view of the galaxy’s core. (distance 2 million light-years / magnitude 4.5)

⭐ 8:21-8:25 p.m. – EVENT: Visible Pass of the Lacrosse 4 Rocket
This Titan 4B sent up an American military satellite in August 2000.
(distance 571 kilometers / magnitude 1.3)

⭐ 8:30-9 p.m. – OBJECT: The Owl Cluster (Caldwell 13)
A perfect eerie addition to the night’s proceedings. Can you spot the two bright “eyes” of the cluster? (distance 7900? light-years / magnitude 6.4)

⭐ 8:40-8:46 p.m. – EVENT: Visible Pass of the Cosmos 2082 Rocket
The Cosmos series of satellites followed the USSR’s Sputniks. This rocket body has been orbiting for over three decades. (distance 844 kilometers / magnitude 2.0)

⭐ 8:45-9 p.m. – STORY: Job’s Coffin
The constellation Delphinus the Dolphin harbors the traditional tales of Greek wonder about the mammals of the sea—though the origin of the asterism’s creepy name is lost to the ages. (distances of four corners 98 to 241 light-years / magnitudes of four corners 3.6 to 4.4)

⭐ 8:45-9:15 p.m. – OBJECT: The Moth Cluster (Melotte 232)
If at this point you’ve had enough of creepy crawlies, try a flying creepy. This object will require a little patience to allow your eyes to adjust to the dim glow of the cluster. (distance ~2500 light-years / magnitude 6.3)

⭐ 8:45-10 p.m. – OBJECT: Mars
Mars is currently the closest it will be to the Earth for the next thirteen years. If the sky is steady and crisp, and your eyes sharp, you may see a polar cap and contrasting surface colors. (distance 62 million kilometers / magnitude -2.5)

⭐ 9-9:30 p.m. – OBJECT: Neptune
Although huge, Neptune is also very far away. It’s deep rich blue tone, however, is striking.
(distance 29 astronomical units / magnitude 7.8)

⭐ 9:15-10 p.m. – OBJECT: Waning Gibbous Moon
A variety of features await the viewer: rays of ejecta, the Bay of Rainbows and the Marsh of Sleep to name a few. (distance 404,000 kilometers / magnitude -12.5)

⭐ 9:45-10 p.m. – OBJECT: The Demon Star

The Spooky Sensation closes with the rising of evil. At least that’s what the Ancients thought. Algol was the first eclipsing binary discovered; a companion star periodically blocks some of its light. (magnitude ?? ; It can range from 2.1 to 3.4 ; What do you think it is?)

➞All viewing is weather permitting. Visible pass predictions are almost certain to have slight alterations come 3 October.
➞Remember: the lower the magnitude number, the brighter the object.
➞Binocular checkout from HRPO front desk will be available, but there are a limited number. We strongly encourage visitors to bring binoculars.

Hurricane Laura Relief: How to Help Louisiana Victims

August 27, 2020 by Tiany Davis

Hurricane Laura was the strongest of any hurricane making landfall in Louisiana since the Last Island Storm in 1856, according to NBC meteorologist Bill Karins said. The storm has seen over 580,000 coastal residents placed under evacuation orders, while nearly 470,000 homes and businesses were left without power, as the hurricane made landfall in Louisiana early Thursday. We’ve put together a list of Hurricane Laura Relief organizations directly helping those impacted by the storm.

Fine and Dandy in Gonzales: My husband and I will be collecting items Friday from 10-5, Saturday 10-2, and Sunday 12-4 pm at the storefront location 38011 HWY 621, next to Ace Hardware. We will be delivering these items to needed communities Monday. If you feel it in your heart to help, here is an Amazon wish list you can order from, or a list of needed items that can be purchased and dropped at the store during those set times.

Louisiana Hospitality Foundation The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation is planning to deploy resources shortly after Hurricane Laura’s landfall to provide hot meals for first responders and community members impacted across southwest Louisiana. Please consider donating to help offset the costs of this effort: https://louisianahospitalityfoundation.org/laura/
