Barn Hill Preserve Pumpkin Patch: Know Before You Go

October 23, 2020 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

The weather last weekend was too glorious to stay indoors, so my family and I made the drive over to Barn Hill Preserve to check out their annual Pumpkin Patch. We had a great time and definitely plan to make it a fall tradition.

Barn Hill Preserve Pumpkin Patch

Barn Hill Preserve Pumpkin Patch

The pumpkin patch is open from 9:00-4:00 every Saturday and Sunday in October and November. Entry is $15 per person, but there was so much to do that I felt the price was justified. The ticket price includes 1 small pumpkin picked from the pumpkin patch. There were animal encounters, a corn pit, pumpkin painting, trick-or-treating, hayrides, corn maze, archery, games, kangaroo walkabout, and lots of other activities.

Add-on encounters with a two-toed sloth, spectacled owl, and anteater are not included in door price and are $10 per activity, per person

Barn Hill Preserve

We arrived around 10:30 am and it only took us about 15 minutes to park and pay. There was a bit of a line but it moved quite efficiently. Upon getting to the front, I was pleasantly surprised to find they take both cash and card options, as I was unable to get a firm answer to this question on their website or social media before arriving.

Barn Hill Preserve Pumpkin Patch

We started the day by practicing our archery, then enjoyed zoo-like enclosures featuring a lynx and a pair of very friendly otters. After that, we found our way to the Kangaroo Walkabout, which we unanimously agreed was the highlight of our trip. Kids and adults alike delighted in getting up close with baby goats, kangaroos, and even a giraffe!

We even got to feed the baby goats, which was such a sweet experience.

Barn Hill Preserve Pumpkin Patch

We then walked down a rocky path to the actual pumpkin patch, which had its ups and downs. From afar, it was beautiful. Between the stunningly perfect weather providing a cloudless blue sky, to the lovely bright greens and oranges of the pumpkins, it made for gorgeous photos. Up close, it was a bit less perfect; we were frequently side-stepping gooey smashed pumpkins and large ant piles. That said, everyone found their perfect pumpkin. There were picnic tables set up where we could have painted them, the thought of even semi-wet paint entering my vehicle was enough for me to veto that activity.

Eating at Barn Hill Preserve

On-site food options limited, but the preserve does permit outside food and drink. We weren’t sure what to expect, so we brought a picnic lunch. It was perfect and there were multiple options for seating. If picnics aren’t your jam, they offer hamburgers and cheeseburgers for $5 each. There was also a mobile bar on site serving coffee, tea, soft drinks, and mocktails, as well as a selection of sweet treats.

Barn Hill Preserve

There were a few things I didn’t love, like the only bathrooms being two portapotties at the entrance. I don’t know about your kids but mine are horrified by the things, which caused us to make an early departure. There wasn’t any direction as to where to find things, like the animal show we got lucky and stumbled upon or the corn maze we never did locate. A map or signage would have been hugely helpful. Lastly, though the crowds weren’t bad, people tended to bunch up around activities and it was difficult to social distance at times. More and more people arrived as the day went by, so my suggestion would be to arrive first thing on a Sunday morning to avoid the bigger crowd.

Barn Hill Preserve

Overall, my family had a great time at Barn Hill Preserve’s pumpkin patch! Our highlights were the Kangaroo Walkabout, the otters, and all the great photo ops. I’m looking forward to going again next year and having an even better time now that we have this experience under our belts! Festivities generally start in mid-November and run through the New Year. Some of the popular and recurring events include shopping/dining/entertainment at the Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets in Shreveport-Bossier, Fasching Festival in Minden, shopping and dining in Antique Alley in Monroe-West Monroe, Festival of Lights in Natchitoches and the Christmas parades in Alexandria/Pineville.

The Louisiana Holiday Trail of Lights can be experienced in one day or a week with each day totally unique and special. The cities are all within driving distance of one another, making the tour a convenient hour-long trip from any one city to its neighboring city. Functional medicine is healthcare for the 21st century. Instead of treating individual diseases, functional medicine looks to heal the underlying dysfunctions present in the body that contribute to each condition. We believe you can’t diagnose or treat someone by assuming they are the same as everyone else. With the most advanced diagnostic testing we are able re-balance physiological systems with targeted nutrition support & lifestyle changes designed with each person in mind to unleash your body’s inherent healing ability, achieve wellness and weight loss. We all have people in our lives who depend on us…but we can’t be there for them if we don’t have our health.

Thyroid disease, fatigue, inability to lose weight, diabetes, cholesterol, gut issues, overall poor lifestyle contribute to many diseases.  Functional Medicine can help you find a new path to health and happiness through better nutrition, exercise, and guidance from Dr. Keta and her team.  It’s a lifestyle NOT diet!

Swamp Haunted Hikes – BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

October 6, 2019 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

The Baton Rouge Holloween events haves started and Swamp Haunted Hikes at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is one of our favorites! Our kids had a great time last year, it’s an evening chock-full of activities and not-so-scary Halloween fun! Check out our short video from last year below!

Swamp Haunted Hikes – BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

Baton Rouge Haunted HikesBluebonnet Swamp’s Haunted Hikes are designed especially for children, but all ages enjoy the spooktacular excitement of these Halloween-themed evenings. Event admission is through the education building where crafts and storytelling are just around the corner. Venture outside to find a way through the Haunted Maze to get to the carnival games for more fun and prizes. Be on the lookout for our silly-swampy costumed characters as they have some great treasures to share! Inside the nature center, the kooky-spooky adventures continue with the Animal Morgue, Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary in the Bat Cave, the Creepy Cavern, and face-painting.
Swamp Haunted Hikes
Costumed characters lurk throughout the site ready to share “kooky treasures” with all the attending little witches, fairies, hobgoblins, and heroes. Don’t be afraid of the dark! At night, head into the woods to get some treats and learn about snakes, insects, rats, and other “creepy critters” at educational stations along the Haunted Hike Trail. No scare tactics are used during this program as we strive to create cheerful-not-fearful experiences for our younger participants. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Costumes are welcome and flashlights are recommended. Food vendors will be on-site during the event. Join us for a howling good time!

WHERE: BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center
WHEN: Oct. 11 + 18 + 25 – Doors open at 6 p.m., trail opens at dark.
COST: $6 per person

We hope to see you there!

LSU Gameday Lactation Spaces for Nursing Moms

September 13, 2019 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Breastfeeding or breast pumping in public can be challenging due to a lack of proper facilities (I’ve personally had to breast pump and breastfeed in public bathrooms, and it is no fun). While breastfeeding laws exist, some mothers may feel uncomfortable nursing in public. By providing mothers with a freestanding lactation suite, they are offering women a safe, private and clean environment to breastfeed or use their breast pump. LSU Gameday lactation spaces provide nursing mothers with a quiet, clean space to breastfeed or pump before going back out to enjoy the game. There are three lactation spaces conveniently located on LSU campus – It would be awesome to get a few INSIDE Tiger Stadium too! 😉
