Dressing for Daisy

October 17, 2015 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Today a special little girl named Daisy is turning 6, a precious little girl who is full of life and has a very contagious smile. Daisy also suffers from a rare, incurable, life threatening disease called Juvenile Myositis.  Because of her disease, she is a frequent patient at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.

Juvenile Dermatomyositis is a form of Juvenile Myositis and is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin and muscles. The immune system attacks healthy cells and tissue causing inflammation.  In JDM, the muscles and skin are targeted and the inflammation causes weakness and rash.  Daisy was diagnosed in 2013 at age 3. She still has redness in her face but doesn’t have much of a skin issue since beginning medication. However, she does have muscle weakness, specifically in her neck and abdomen, and pain in her legs and feet. She also doesn’t have much stamina and tires easily.

Dress for Daisy

Since Daisy’s diagnosis, her family has been committed to helping find a cure.  Because JM is so rare, only 2-3 in a million children have it, they get no government funding and have no major media attention. Daisy loves to dress up.  Clothes and shoes are the quickest way to her heart, naturally, her family decided a fashion show would be the perfect fundraiser.  A fashion show will show what Daisy loves.  It was perfect and they assembled a team of retail event managers, markets, and medical field professionals.  This odd combination of team members has rocketed this event to where it is now with many sponsors of local and national businesses.

Dressing for Daisy

We, at Baton Rouge Moms, quickly fell in love with Daisy after seeing this video and we knew that we wanted to support Dressing for Daisy. The event will feature looks from Gap Kids, music, food, face painting, Princesses, SmileBox photography, raffles and more.

Laying the Groundwork for Your Babies, Toddlers, and Pre-schoolers

October 1, 2015 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Do you have trouble scheduling your family’s many activities? What are your older kids doing after school this fall? Maybe you started dance classes, joined a soccer team, are trying Spanish, piano, tennis, or art lessons, or giving your child a little help with extra tutoring?

Why do we as parents feel like these extra curricular actives are important?

These activities help our children grow up to be well rounded. These activities help us and our children identify their interests. And the more immediate benefit is harnessing their endless energy into productive activities.

Gymboree_Sep_OTL_Play is -Confidence!

So how do you lay the groundwork for your babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers? PLAY!

I am not talking about putting some toys out around your toddler while you are on the phone catching up with an old friend or cooking dinner. While both of these things are important, your child craves some dedicated play time with their favorite person – YOU!

I encourage you to play with your child at least once a day. Sit down with your child, without the distraction of your phone, the tv, other devices and give your whole attention to the little person who adores you.

Make a list of play activities but don’t be afraid to repeat activities over and over – young children learn through repetition.

Ask your child a lot of questions. And LISTEN to their answers (even if it is just babbling), it will make the your child feel important. Teach them the give and take of conversation, and as their imagination blossoms encourage pretend play.

Make eye contact with your child – this has been proven to lead to more confident older children.

Gymboree_Sep_OTL_Teach Me

Talk to your child how you want them to talk, this is important before your child is talking & after they turn into a little chatterbox.

Both gross and fine motor skills need practice for developing body control. So, add in climbing, dancing, jumping, skipping, and other large muscle group work with coloring (or scribbling), puzzles, stacking blocks, and other more focused activities.

Playing with your child sounds easy, but it is hard to schedule into your busy life. If you have a class to attend, you will be more accountable for your time. Come see us at Gymboree Play & Music to spend some quality play time with your child in one of our classes – Play & Learn, Music, and Art. Our memberships are monthly and always include Open Gym free play time! Our schedule is located at www.gymboreeclasses.com.

Five Benefits of Piano Lessons – National Piano Month

September 30, 2015 by Guest Contributor

“Ask the Experts” is a series on Baton Rouge Moms where local experts will share their thoughts, opinions and answer questions relating to health, wellness and parenting. If you have a question for one of our experts, please leave it in the comments below  to be featured in an upcoming article.

Ask the Experts Baton Rouge

This is a guest post by Rebecca Bellelofrom, owner of Piano Pathways for our “Ask the Experts” series.

Learning to play the piano is a rewarding process. Playing music is a fun and enjoyable activity, but like anything worth doing well, it takes a commitment and hard work. When I think of all of the wonderful reasons to take piano lessons, what comes to mind first are the many musical benefits that piano lessons provide. Despite studies of music’s effects on the brain and improving test scores, the most powerful benefit of music lessons is, in my opinion, the gain of a musical talent!

CHILD-PIANO-

In addition to musical benefits, piano lessons also foster many wonderful non-musical characteristics. In fact, these non-musical skills are actually very important for musicians, and quite necessary to playing an instrument! Here are five benefits that can transpire from piano lessons:

Five Benefits of Piano Lessons

1. The ability to play a musical instrument. Learning how to create beautiful sounds on the piano is a lasting reward of lessons. Every person, despite age or skill level, can learn foundational piano skills and how to create tuneful music. Piano-playing is a form of personal expression that provides a healthy, creative outlet. Playing music is a special ability, but a very teachable and accessible ability that every person can learn!

2. The ability to read music. Music reading is typically taught alongside piano playing. Reading music is certainly not the only way to learn to play an instrument, but it is an accessible skill and common teaching approach in piano lessons. Standard music notation is how classical piano literature has been passed down for hundreds of years, and how composers traditionally notate their musical creations. By reading music, a musician has the opportunity to learn endless musical repertoire from any culture, time period, or artist.

3. An appreciation for different types of music. I want my piano students to be well-rounded musicians. No matter the genre of music we are studying, for example, popular, holiday, classical, I want students to play exciting music from different history periods, cultures, and composers. By learning why music was written the way it was written and about its purpose in the culture, a student can adopt an appreciation for different kinds of music. Appreciation for different things leads to tolerance and empathy~ great life-skills for every person to emulate!

4. Goal-setting. Having a structured practice routine is essential, even mandatory, to progress in piano. The best tool I can recommend for successful practicing is to set a goal. Ask the question, “What do I want to accomplish in this practice session?” Set a goal for each time you practice, and have a practice plan in mind! Of course, goal-setting is not something unique to piano practicing. Setting and meeting goals is ubiquitous to many areas of a healthy and fulfilling life.

5. Working through “struggle”. Piano is possibly one of the first real challenges that a child comes across. Piano skills take months, even years, to develop. Children who are used to doing things correct the first time initially have a hard time understanding that this won’t happen in piano! At times, playing piano can be difficult, even frustrating. During these struggles, employ approaches such as problem solving and creative thinking. By struggling during the learning process, a child learns persistence, emotional strength, and confidence.
There are so many more empirical and antidotal benefits to piano study. What are other benefits from piano lessons that you can add to this list?
• Time management skills
• Performing under pressure
• Self-evaluative skills
• Listening skills
• Memorization
• Delayed gratification
• Fine muscle coordination
• Ability to respond to criticism
• How to handle winning and losing
• Working with others
No matter why you enroll your child, or even yourself, in music lessons, I hope piano adds joy to your life! Happy playing!

Piano Pathways Summer Camp 2015

May 26, 2015 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

You might remember us singing the praises of Piano Pathways Summer Camp last summer. This wonderful camp is back again with spots still available! Located at 9270 Siegen Lane, #304 behind the Calandros Grocery strip on the corner of Perkins and Siegen, centrally located and easy to find!

Cultivating an appreciation of music in our children is so important. Playing a musical instrument can enhance and develop math skills, language, coordination, social skills and improvements in spatial-temporal reasoning. Music is one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children and summer is the perfect time of year to nurture a love of music and provide kids with a fun and educational musical experience with Piano Pathways Summer Camp.

New this year is our “repeat camp” the week of July 20-24, ages 6-10. This is for children who have taken another week of camp and want to “repeat” piano camp again because it was so much fun and they want to play more– OR for students who aren’t necessarily beginners or too far along to go in our beginners’ camps, but still want that fun, positive camp experience to learn more about playing the piano. These camps are Monday-Friday, 9-12 each day, tuition is $185 which includes materials and morning snack.

Piano Lessons:

Piano Pathways is owned by Rebecca C. Bellelo, Ph.D.  The studio was created with the idea that every person is musical, and music is for every person. Piano Pathways offers a variety of classes and programs for students of all ages {yes, adults too} and skill levels – private lessons, group classes, and recreational music making classes.

Piano Pathways Summer Camp:

Piano Pathways offers camps for students of all ages and interests: every student will have a fun, first experience at the piano with piano camps for beginner kids & teens! Piano Pathways‘ week-long piano camps were created to expose kids to playing the piano in a positive, group-class environment. If your child has ever asked about piano lessons or shows interest in creating music at home, these camps are the perfect way to introduce children & teens to the piano. Children are guaranteed to have fun and learn to play the piano with this successful, first approach!

The camps are grouped by children ages: 6-7, 7-10 and 11 and above. Piano camps are held in Piano Pathways piano lab, where every child is at his or her own instrument.

Get ready to rock at piano! These week-long piano camps are motivating in a fun, interactive camp setting. As the original studio who first brought Baton Rouge piano camps for beginners, these camps are perfect for children and teens with little or no experience. Students will learn music reading, and also solo- and ensemble- playing skills. A variety of musical styles are explored, along with lots of ensemble playing to build musicianship and listening skills. Piano Pathways‘ goal for these beginners camps are for students to have a positive and enriching first experience at the piano. Beginners’ camps meet from 9:00-12:00 each week, Monday-Friday.

In the week-long camps for current students, song-writing camp and piano rock-band camp are sure to make your child love playing the piano! Piano Pathways‘ song-writing camp will be an exciting week as students explore composing- in a style that each student chooses. In rock-band camp, students will rock to the top hits of pop artists. Students will build skills in reading rhythms and chord charts– using familiar music that students know and love! These camps are meant to be a fun ensemble experience that boosts confidence and inspires your child’s love of piano.

Each camp and group class has a maximum of 6 students, and enrollment is based on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact the studio today to register and reserve your place in one of these exciting summer camps!

The following weeks are available…

The buy and sell world can be filled with uncertainty. Too many of us have experienced flaky swappers or online glitches, and we’re all familiar with heartbreaking news stories about meet-ups gone tragically wrong. So when it comes to online shopping, it’s no surprise that more and more people are choosing the fun, safe way to find great deals and earn money on the side.

Created by a mom in 2012, VarageSale is an online marketplace for buying, selling and connecting with local people in your community. Whether you’re on the lookout for amazing deals on brand name items or are hoping to declutter your home and make some extra cash, VarageSale is the way to go.

VarageSale Baton Rouge

How does it work? Easy!

  • Visit the website or download the free app
  • Search for a community near you and sign up using FB connect
  • Post items to the feed in just a few simple clicks
  • Browse the feed to see what people are selling
  • Use the search feature to find something specific
  • Send a PM to a seller when you find an item you want to buy
  • View a member’s profile before meeting to swap
  • Leave member praises if you have a good experience

VarageSale (already popular in NOLA) is expanding across Louisiana by launching two new communities: one in Baton Rouge and one for Denham Springs/Central! The cool part? They’re holding a 48 Hour Preview Sale to celebrate. Members who sign up early get exclusive access to a ton of great deals AND (my sources tell me) a few “super cool surprises.”

What are you waiting for? Pre-register now to get exclusive access to the 48 hour preview sale and join the fun early. See you there!! 😉
