Berry picking season is one of our family’s favorite times of year. There’s nothing like filling a basket with sun-warmed strawberries and watching the kids get excited about food straight from the farm.
It’s fun, it’s hands-on, and it’s such a sweet way to connect with local farms. And here in Louisiana, we’re lucky – our season starts earlier than most, which means berry picking near Baton Rouge is already underway. 🍓
Below, we’ve compiled a list of fruit-picking farms. While not all of these strawberry farms are right around the corner—some are an hour or two away—they make for the perfect day trip and a fun adventure in a new town. So, roll up your sleeves and fill your buckets with fresh, juicy fruit!
Good to Know Before You Go
Before heading out, be sure to call the farm, as many factors can affect your visit, including berry ripening, weather conditions, and fruit availability.
What to Bring
Pack for a farm trip as you would for a day at the park. Since berry patches offer little shade, bring hats and sunscreen. Wear closed-toe shoes—no flip-flops or sandals—because those pesky Louisiana ants are no joke! Bring baby wipes and a change of clothes for the little ones—you never know what kind of berry-filled fun they’ll get into!
What is the best month to go strawberry picking?
While June marks the peak season for strawberry picking across much of the country, with some farmers’ markets even offering them in the fall due to ever-bearing varieties that continue producing until nearly the first frost, Louisiana enjoys a unique timetable. Here, strawberry picking season begins as early as February and often extends through May.
What strawberries are native to Louisiana?
The Klondike, Daybreak, Headliner, and Tangi strawberries are all varieties that were traditionally cultivated in Louisiana.

Landry-Poche’ Farms

Strawberry availability is posted daily on the Landry-Poche Farm Facebook Page.
Visiting Landry-Poche’ farms is like taking a step back in time. There’s a fruit stand on site where you can buy bushels of strawberries already picked, or you can pay $12 a bucket and pick your own. There were rows and rows of strawberries to pick from, and it doesn’t take long to fill your bucket.

The farm also sells breads, jams, and fresh veggies. We munched on the yummy strawberries, and I made strawberry sangria with all the berries we had leftover. It was a great little getaway, and I totally suggest y’all going to check them out and support local farmers.

After Berry picking – Caring for Berries
Store unwashed berries in containers or gallon-sized zip-top bags layered with paper towels. Refrigerated berries will last about two days. Frozen blueberries can last from season to season or beyond, do not wash berries for the freezer. THEY MUST BE DRY BEFORE FREEZING; you can wash before use. Serve at room temperature after washing with a spray of cool water. Whole berries can be frozen in zip-top freezer bags for jams, smoothies, and homemade ice cream. Add berries to cereal, smoothies, or snacks straight from the refrigerator or freezer. Berries are fat-free, low in calories, and have fiber, vitamin C, and disease-fighting antioxidants. We know you’ll enjoy blueberry picking near Baton Rouge & Beyond!
