Rockin at the Swamp

BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

Join Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center to explore the exciting world of rocks, minerals, gemstones, and fossils. Add to your rock collection or find some unique gift items at our Rockhound Market. Try your skill scaling our rock climbing wall. Learn to identify different rocks and minerals and make your own take-home identification card on our Treasure Trail. Experience the excitement of the gold rush while hunting for iron pyrite in our Gold Mine. Try out some rockin’ crafts or paint your own Rock Animal in our craft corner. Explore ancient life forms in the Fossil Quarry. This is one rockin’ day of fun highlighting geology and earth science. Pass discounts are available.

Plan to spend the day at the park! They will have a Farmer’s Market including Food trucks, professional kite demos, kite making workshops, kite giveaways, music by DJ KJack, and a special appearance by Pyro Pilots.

This is a FREE event! Visit with the Dino guys from The Dinosaur Experience on the patio of Le Chien Brewing Co.! This awesome group of guys has some seriously cool pets they are bringing with them for all of us to meet! They are hosting not one but TWO show times to make sure everyone gets to see the show. Bring your Dino-loving little ones (and dino lovin adults, duh) along to the family-friendly Le Chien Brewing Co.! Can you help Ranger Martin keep his mischievous dinosaurs under control?

 

Holi Festival of Baton Rouge
Saturday, March 11th,  2 PM – 5 PM
Repentance Park

The Holi is a unique festival of colors, harmony, friendship, and love that continues to grow in popularity each year. Although an Indian festival, this event attracts people from many different cultures and backgrounds from the South Louisiana community. At the 3rd Annual Holi Festival of Baton Rouge, there will be henna artists on site, facepainting, cultural dance performances, food, beer, and wine, and lots of COLOR! Admission is free and the event is family friendly.

 

John James Audubon Day

Audubon State Historic Site (45 min. from Baton Rouge)

John James Audubon Day

Saturday March 11th, visit Audubon State Historic Site and explore the world and legacy of John James Audubon’s time at Oakley Plantation in 1821. From 10 AM until 4 PM Activities will include:
10:00 AM Walking with Audubon. A guided walk through the grounds around Oakley, the things he saw, the people he knew.
10:30 AM Children’s activities- Scavenger Hunt
11:00 AM Special Oakley House tour- A sneak peek at our new tour format with quotes from John Audubon.
11:30 AM John Audubon at Oakley Plantation costumed Ranger led talk in front of Oakley House.
Noon Walking with Audubon. A guided walk through the grounds around Oakley, the things he saw, the people he knew.
12:30 Children’s Activities- Creating a Food Chain to discover the part Birds play in nature.
1:00PM Darlene Reeves of the Baton Rouge Audubon Society will be in the theatre with talks on many of Audubon’s prints, how they were made and their history.
1:30 PM Children’s Activities – Creating natural and recycled Bird Feeders
2:00 PM John Audubon at Oakley Plantation costumed Ranger led talk in front of Oakley House.
2:30 PM Children’s Activities-Creating Bird Houses to take home
3:00 PM Darlene Reaves of the Baton Rouge Audubon Society will show Audubon’s prints and his commentary on the birds and the paintings.
