As Memorial Day weekend approaches, we have the opportunity to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country while embracing the joyous summer spirit and the cherished tradition of family gatherings. It’s a time to pay homage to our heroes and celebrate the season of sunshine and fun.

Here are our Top 5 Memorial Day weekend picks!

Memorial Day Weekend in Baton Rouge

Blue Star Mothers Flag Ceremony
Saturday, May 27, Starting at 9 am
State Capitol Gardens

Blue Star Mothers Flag Ceremony

Saturday, May 27th, BSM and volunteers will be planting 11,000 American flags and reading the names of the fallen from 9/11 to the present day.
The flags will be carried in by the For Our Fallen organization which consists of active and former military members. Please line the street in front of the State Capitol @ 7:30am to Welcome the Heroes Hump carrying the flags.
The opening Ceremony will begin @ approximately 8:30 am followed by the planting of the flags. The public is encouraged to attend. Seating for the ceremony is very limited. Please bring your lawn chairs. It’s a great experience for your children and grandchildren!!
Flag pick up will be on June 3rd at 8:00 a.m.

Gonzales Jambalaya Festival

The Jambalaya Festival Association, chartered in 1967, invites you to mark your calendar for the 56th Annual Jambalaya Festival to be held in Gonzales from May 26-28, 2023.
A weekend of delicious food, great music, and fun experiences the whole family will enjoy.
 The festival features World Champion Jambalaya, live music and entertainment, carnival rides, and so much fun it takes three days to get it all in.
Location: 219 South Irma Boulevard

 

Movie in the Garden: Fae Fest Edition
Saturday, May 27th, 12 pm – 4 pm
BREC’s Independence Community Park

Come one, come all for a magical day full of whimsy and lore. Come dressed in your favorite FAE costume and celebrate the earth and the preservation of everything that makes it the beautiful place we know, while enjoying whimsical and fun activities with a FAE twist. This event will feature movies, games, strolling entertainment, FAE folk, face painters, crafts, and other exciting family entertainment for all to enjoy. Admissions is free for fairies, sprites, gnomes, and elves of all ages. Costumes are certainly encouraged!

Baton Rouge Concert Band Memorial Day Concert

 

The Baton Rouge Concert Band will present their Memorial Day concert to honor those who lost their lives while defending our country. They will play marches and patriotic music but will also include music appropriate for somber remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Join them on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, at 7:00 pm at the main branch of the East Baton Rouge Library, 7711 Goodwood Blvd. The concert is free!

 

May this Memorial Day weekend be a time for reflection and celebration, where we honor our heroes and embrace the bonds of family and the joys of summer they fought so valiantly to preserve.

Memorial Day generally marks the beginning of summer. Many of you have plans to go swimming, enjoy a crawfish boil or cookout with family and friends. If you have yet to plan anything special for today, we have put together a list of  Memorial Day happenings.

Memorial Day Baton Rouge

We wish you a Happy Memorial Day! We remember and honor the brave men and women that have sacrificed so much to preserve and protect our freedoms. Thank you to those that have served and continue to serve, we appreciate you!

Guide to Memorial Day happenings around Baton Rouge

  • USS Kidd – Veterans and community members are invited to a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony being sponsored by the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial on May 26. The ceremony will be held in the Louisiana Memorial Plaza, located at 305 South River Road, at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 26th. This event is free and open to the public. 342-1942, www.usskidd.com Free of charge.
  • Baton Rouge Concert Band Memorial Day Concert: Monday, May 26 7:00p, Louisiana State CapitolThe Baton Rouge Concert Band will playing at the State Capitol steps on Memorial Day, May 26 at 7:00pm. Free of charge.
  • Ascension Veterans Memorial Park Committee will host a Memorial Day observance at Veterans Park, Gonzales, LA at 11 a.m. Hundreds will gather around the Park Amphitheater to remember those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country so that we may continue to live our lives in freedom. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary will serve refreshments and pass out Buddy Poppies to observers. A multi high school choir will lend their voices in song. Local JROTC organizations will be standing sentinel throughout the park. Local Chapter Rolling Thunder motorcycle riders will stand guard over a coffin symbolizing the fallen soldiers for the duration of program. The Veterans Park is located at 612 S. Irma Blvd in Gonzales (next to Ascension Parish Library).

Outlying Area:

  • MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY: 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Bouligny Plaza, 102 W. Main St., New Iberia. Flag ceremony, 21 gun salute and patriotic music. Free. (337) 344-9397. 
  • MEMORIAL DAY AT PARAGON: 10 a.m., Avoyelles Veterans Monument, La. 1, Marksville. The ceremony will include a 21 gun salute performed by the Avoyelles Parish Honor Guard. A reception will follow. All veterans and active military personnel can enjoy a free buffet on Memorial Day.

 

The following will be closed:

  • All city-parish, state and federal offices
  • Post Offices and most banks
  • Public Libraries
  • Public Schools and Public Universities
  • CATS buses will run on Saturday schedule
