Sail 250 New Orleans: A Once-in-a-Generation Tall Ship Celebration

Baton Rouge families, this is one of those events you circle on the calendar now! This spring, New Orleans will be the very first stop as the U.S. welcomes the tall ships of the world to the Port of New Orleans for a nationwide celebration of the U.S’s 250th anniversary.

I have to tell you this. The last time the tall ships came to New Orleans, we took our boys. They were younger then, and it ended up being one of the best family outings we ever had. Truly a core memory kind of day.

We spent hours walking the riverfront, touring the ships, talking with sailors, learning about naval vessels and what life is really like aboard them. The boys were fascinated. It was hands on history, real conversations, real learning, and just an all around incredible experience.

It was a full day of fun and education wrapped together, and now that they are young men, it is still something they remember and talk about. That day stuck with them.

So when I tell you this is a once in a generation opportunity, I mean it.

From May 28 through June 1, 2026, the Mississippi River waterfront will be transformed into a breathtaking nautical spectacle as the largest ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world docks along the historic riverfront. This is America’s Sestercentennial celebration kicking off right here in Louisiana. And yes, you can step aboard the ships.
