Free Swim Lessons in Baton Rouge for Second Graders

As a mom in South Louisiana, swim safety is one of those things that never feels optional. Between backyard pools, summer camps, beach trips, lakes, rivers, and splash days, our kids are around water all summer long.

The YMCA of the Capital Area is offering free swim lessons this summer for second grade students across the Baton Rouge area according to WBRZ, giving local families access to one of the most important life skills a child can learn.

For many families, swim lessons can be expensive or hard to fit into the budget. This program helps remove that barrier so more children can learn basic water safety skills, no matter where they live or what their family can afford.

The lessons will be led by trained instructors and will focus on practical, age-appropriate swim safety skills. Kids will learn how to float, tread water, and safely enter and exit the pool. These are the kinds of basics that can make a real difference in helping a child stay calm and safer around water.

And in South Louisiana, that matters. Between backyard pools, summer trips, camp days, and time near lakes and rivers, water safety is something most parents think about often this time of year.

This effort is part of a larger push by the YMCA of the Capital Area to make swim instruction more accessible across the region. Local school districts are also helping connect families to the program, making it easier for students to participate.

The impact is already clear. In 2025, the YMCA of the Capital Area provided more than 3,000 free swim lessons, and more than 80 percent of participating children reached key water safety milestones.

Students will take part in swim lessons covering floating, treading water and safe entry and exit techniques.

For Baton Rouge parents, this is more than a summer activity. It is peace of mind.
