Car Organization Tips
- Have a bag dedicated for trash and empty weekly.
- Take in – Take out! Make it a family rule that whatever they carry into the car they must carry out.
- Vacuum car weekly, this is a great chore to pass on to your older kids.Â
- Keep the driver’s area free of clutter and keep frequently needed items easily accessible.
- Buy small plastic containers to keep on the road items for the children, such as baby toys, coloring books, word puzzles, crayons or pencils. Let each child decorate their own storage box with their name and stickers.
- Prevent items from shifting in the trunk with bags or bins.
- If your children take part in many different sports or outdoor activities, keep different activity equipment grouped together.
- Keep a few zip-lock bags or clear plastic bags inside your vehicle to easily house soiled or wet garments or to have readily available for a sick kiddo.
- Food and Water – keep a few water bottles, granola bars or other non perishable items in the car just in case you get stranded.
- Keep a family emergency kit in the car at all times with the following items:
- Flashlight
- Jumper cables
- Ice scraper
- First-aid kit
- Blanket – should you get stranded in the cold, you will want a blanket to keep warm.
- Basic toiletries
- Baby wipes – you can never have to many baby wipes or disinfectant wipes in the car.
- Diapers if needed
- Paper towels
- Kleenex
- Extra jackets or sweaters
- Phone charger
- Paper and pen
- If you have littles, you will want to have an extra set of clothes on hand. Even for big kids a t-short and shorts come in handy if someone has an accident or gets sick.
- $50 cash – you never know when you will need some cash in a pinch.

I think having bags in your car is a fantastic tip. We have used them many times!
My husband likes to clean out the car at a public park. I should probably take his advice. It’s no fun when the kids get out of the van at carpool and trash falls out with them. O.O
Travel sized everything.
Empty your trash out everytime you stop to fill the gas tank.
I’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about with these bags. Now I see!
I keep an index card with important phone numbers in the glove box, just in case your cell goes dead and also a camera… You never know when you might need to capture something on film….. An accident, beautiful site,, your child, etc.
To keep our car clean I follow this rule – clean out the car every time we pull into the garage.
I would love to have these bags. Having 2 kids, and trying to stay organized is a hassle
I am not an organized person at all, these bags would totally be a life saver. I could really benefit from these in my life.
I like to keep wipes and extra clothes in my car along with a bag for dirty items. You never know when you may need it.
keeping a bag or box in the trunk
I love thirty one products. Very durable and keeps everything organized at your fingertips! Love
My husband says that on our floorboard at any one time there are enough clothes and toys and food to take care of our family of 7. It’s really rough trying to stay organized in the car, but we have an only water rule so that spills aren’t as traumatic…..for the parents 🙂
Love 31 bags, these are great tips for the car. People often laugh at all the things I keep on hand in the car, but when they need things they know who has them!
I needed to read these.
Getting my van organized is huge for me I unfortunately is not for my kids though. They are very messy abs I’m always asking them to clean up the back. I love the ideas you posted!
I could really use help with organizing our car.. clutter seems to accumulate, especially in the backseat! The only thing I seem to be doing that’s helpful is keeping a small baggy for trash. Oh & my 12 year old cleans it out when it gets too messy – lets him earn a few dollars & gets rid of the clutter – albeit temporarily!
The gets thing I’ve done is stop allowing the kids to eat in the car.
I don’t have any great tips, my van is horribly messy 😉
I like the tip that if you take it in the car, you need to take it out. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to crawl in the back of the van to get out what the kids have left behind

I like to keep small compact sizes of wipes, sunscreen, deoterant, advil, off, hand warmer packs, & shout wipes in my van drawer under the seat! You never know when you will need something! Also my van has Sto-N-go seats so in the seat compartments I keep a first aid kit, clorox wipes, snuggie blankets, & non perishable food in a small rubbermaid for snacks just incase we ever get STUCK somewhere!! Every few months I change them out!! i know CALL ME CRAZY!! But I like to say I prepared for ANYTHING!! And most people who know me say I am!!
I try to keep a couple grocery bags in the car at all times to easily pick up trash that accumulates in the car weekly!
Thanks for the great ideas! I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow! 🙂
I make a habit of cleaning out the garbage from the car each time I stop for gas.
Make it a priority to clean out the car every week.
I love having bags in my car & I love the hangup organizer idea!
I need help with this for sure! Great tips!

Honestly, I have no tips! I am in need of some serious help. What an awesome system for organizing your car! I NEED this! I enjoyed reading some of the tips, like taking the trash out each time you stop. Some great ideas. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love giving each kid their own travel kit. That way, there is less mess!
I need all the help I can get organizing our car.. I do have a garbage bag in the front and the car topper does help on long trips
Who wouldn’t love a more organized car?!
I always look around before getting out of the car and grab something that doesn’t belong in there. It helps me keep unwanted items to a minimum.
My favorite thing is just a trash bag. We have a little bag that hangs somewhere in the car to collect trash. Then, when we fill up with gas, we dump out the trash. I cannot stand getting into cars with trash all over the place!
I have placed trash bag in my car, which help me to keep it clean and well organized. Its pretty much a necessity when you have kids.
