Buy local and eat fresh in and around Baton Rouge

When I lived in Baton Rouge it was super convenient to frequent the farmers market on the weekends. I loved going and buying local groceries. There is a feeling of security knowing where your food was grown and how it got to your plate.

Now that we have moved to Prairieville, I never find time or remember to go to the market. Recently, I was recommended a local business that has a fix for this. Indieplate.com is connecting local farmers to Baton Rouge, Prairieville, Denham Springs, & Port Allen by bringing their goods to your door! The options are endless with produce, dairy, beef, poultry, seafood, breads, desserts, snacks, meal baskets, and much, much more. Anything you order can be delivered for a flat $3.95 or you can choose to meet at their designated meeting stops and save your $3.95. Personally, they had me at $3.95 and I wanted the full Indieplate experience.

For my first order I tried to get a decent variety. I ordered ground beef, squash and zucchini, strawberries, bread, steaks, milk, and butter. I also selected a steak dinner basket for two. The meats and butter came frozen and the rest was fresh. The ground beef was very good quality and seemed to have very low fat content. (Based by how much fat was drained off when I cooked it, we estimated it was more than likely 90/10.) The veggies were small but delicious and tender, and the strawberries were so sweet. The things I will be repeating on my next order, beef, bread, milk, and butter (only because I have family chickens, and my own garden for the rest of my groceries). The bread was heavenly and the milk and butter was the best I have ever tasted!

Each farm or provider has a bio that tells you a little bit about themselves. That’s something you can’t get in a big chain grocery store. Buying local isn’t always the cheapest option but knowing that you are supporting your local economy and that your groceries are fresh is an amazing feeling. Another way Indieplate is trying to balance the cost difference is by their rewards program. For every dollar spent with them you receive one point. At 500 points you receive $20 credit.
