Saturday Science
Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.

Teens and adults are invited to the Main Library at Goodwood on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. for Saturday Science, LSU’s free public talk series connecting the community to science and technology. This month, Dr. Juhan Frank will speak on how some stars attract each other, dance, and merge. Many stars, perhaps most, that appear as a single point of light in the sky, are in

fact two or more stars bound together by gravity. Some are so far apart that they age as single stars without ever interacting beyond the gravity that binds them and may die without affecting each other. Others are close enough to exchange mass and change their lives. Some are still closer, so that gravity’s fatal attraction will bring them so close that they end up merging into a single object. What follows depends on the masses of the pair. Sometimes the merger explodes as a supernova, sometimes produces a different type of cataclysm, and sometimes the product survives as a single star of unusual and puzzling properties. These “Interacting Binary Stars” and “Stellar Mergers” teach us a great deal about the evolution of the universe and the origin of the chemical elements.

National Library Week
April 23-29

Show your appreciation and support for libraries by visiting your East Baton Rouge Parish Library during National Library Week, April 23-29! The theme for National Library Week 2023 is “There’s More to the Story,” illustrating the fact that in addition to the books in library collections, available in a variety of formats, libraries offer so much more. Local libraries now lend items like museum passes, games, arduino kits, paintings, and hotspots. Library programming brings communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, crafting classes, and lectures. And library infrastructure advances communities, providing internet and technology access, literacy skills, and support for businesses, job seekers, and entrepreneurs.

National Library Week is a time to highlight the essential role that libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. Check out the testimonials from EBRPL patrons included in each section of this month’s Source! In addition to visiting your local branch, you can shout out your love for libraries on social media by following EBRPL on Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek.
