Good Ideas Gone Bad

April 25, 2015 by Guest Contributor

Have you ever noticed that when it comes to raising children, other people are always full of good ideas?

Grandma gently suggests that your toddler is too old to have a pacifier, and honestly, you agree. You gather all the pacifiers in the house and toss them, fighting the urge to dive into the garbage can to get them back. WHAT HAVE I DONE?!  You wring your hands with worry.

“Now we can see her sweet faces in pictures,” exclaims Grandma. “Those silly pacifiers were always in the way.” You nod in agreement. Yes, this was the right thing to do.

Several screechy days later, Grandma calls. She overhears her shrieking grandchild and asks in horror, “What IS that?!”

That’s your grand daughter. Unplugged. She’s pretty loud, huh? Yeah, I didn’t know she could make that noise, either.

You can replace the pacifier in this story with a hundred different things, like bringing three kids to the splash pad alone or going to “Cow Appreciation Day” at Chick-Fil-A at 5:00 p.m. All of these things sound like a good idea … unless you’re the person doing it. Have you ever tried to visit Baskin Robbins on a Saturday by yourself, outnumbered by children? Have you ever taken tiny kids to the beach? I think I left about half of my marbles in Gulf Shores last summer — I still haven’t recovered from that trip.

Baton Rouge Parents

I try to be a good mom. I want to be fun. I want my children to experience all of the wonderful parts of childhood, so I am always open to good ideas. It’s just that, when it boils down to it, most good ideas involve the loss of yet another vital chunk of my sanity.

I really need my sanity.

People tell me that as my kids get older, things will get easier, and I believe them. In the meantime, if you have a good idea … let’s table it for a few more years.

Introducing Nine New BRM Contributors

May 23, 2014 by Tiany Davis

Baton Rouge Moms has grown by leaps and bounds since we launched 7 months ago,  with over 8000 Baton Rouge moms  on our Facebook page sharing ideas and offering support to each other. The Baton Rouge Moms website is also growing! We put out a call for contributors a couple of months ago and the response was overwhelming.

We are excited to be adding eight new voices to the Baton Rouge Moms team! This is a smart, diverse group of ladies and each of them brings a unique perspective to BRM. We are honored to have them share there hearts, ideas, tips and thoughts with you all.

Baton Rouge Moms

Here are the new Baton Rouge Moms contributors you’ll hear from….

Alexandra Sorice PhotoAlexandra relocated to Louisiana from New York in 2013 just before the birth of her son, Nicholas. Leaving her career in fashion behind in early 2012, she became a certified Yoga Instructor and has since added Anti-gravity Yoga and Barre fitness to her repertoire.  Alexandra is excited to be part of the very first all Kids Yoga Studio in Baton Rouge, Playoga, offering classes for children 6-weeks and up.Juggling over 20 classes per week while raising an active toddler in a modern world is not as easy as some make it seem. She believes it’s important to support other moms and their choices on how their children are raised. Sometimes you need to be reminded that you are not the only mom with a toddler that screams all morning or won’t eat his dinner some nights. Feeling supported by other moms, helps to keep you sane.

Alexandra married husband Taylor (from Montana…they met at their best friend’s wedding) in 2014, they will have a second wedding this August in New York at her families church. Their son Nicholas always comes first, but when their busy lives slow down for a moment and are able to find some “down time”, you can find her outside playing with her boys, dabbling in interior decorating, enjoying a glass of wine and definitely not folding laundry. (Why can’t clothes fold themselves??)

Baton Rouge MomsMy name is Brittany Anderson I am a life long resident of Louisiana. I graduated Zachary High, Bachelors from NSU in Psychology, and Licensed RDH. I am a first time mom to a beautiful baby girl, Emma Grace. I have a wonderful and loving husband, Cody, of 2 years (and counting). I grew up hunting and fishing and absolutely love cooking (though I rarely have time for it these days). I have had my own battles with being a first time mom from struggling with PPD to deciding how and when to go to work and just learning how to balance motherhood with normal household tasks. I hope to learn from other moms, share my own experiences, and receive great feedback and support from our wonderful community of moms! 🙂

Baton Rouge Moms Blog ContributorI’m Doris, I was a working mom until a year ago when I was blessed to become a full time stay at home mom. I’m honored & humbled to raise our Jackson who was born with a rare physical disability, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congentia (AMC), basically he has a lack of muscle and tight joint; and manage our home. It has always been my dream to be a wife and mom who was dedicated to her family and I’m living out that dream. I’m able to serve immensely at my son’s school and here at my home. There is no greater joy for me than serving my Savior and my family, it is my life’s calling.

photo(2)My name is Jessica Walker and I live in the Central area. I graduated from St. Amant High school and have moved and traveled all across the state as well as Mississippi. I am a full time working, running, first time mom and wife.
I am an old college athlete (washed up) just trying to find the balance of being a good mom, wife and person. I am very family oriented and love spending time with my family. After spending 6 years on the road for my sport and college education, I realized that home is really where the heart is.I ran my first ½ marathon for St. Jude in Memphis in 2009 with my life-long friend and have been hooked ever since. My mom now runs with us and we have made the trip every year, rain, snow, sleet or shine! Last year I ran unknowingly 6 weeks pregnant and had my fastest time thus far. This year, we are running the full marathon! This is going to be a huge time commitment, training wise, so I will have to depend on the hubby and other family to help with the baby.
I am always trying to push myself physically and mentally and I have an old school mentality that I can do anything that I put my mind to, which sometimes gets me in trouble. I tend to be very hard on myself and take it personally when things don’t go as I feel/think they should – AKA – a non-sleeping through the night 9 month old, that is currently sleeping with me (which is of course the #1 mommy rule breaker – to some). I can’t wait to open this new chapter in our lives and connect with other Baton Rouge Moms! I don’t do Facebook, but love Instagram and occasionally Twitter.

Having lived through divorce herself, she is passionate about supporting single/divorced moms and blended families. She is an enthusiastic fan of sports and most anything techy or nerdy, and also enjoys travel, reading, music, and attempting to run. She can’t craft anything to save her life, but she does cook a mean pot of gumbo.

I’m Taresa, taresa30 years young and a stay at home mom to my 19 month old son Landen. Originally from New Roads, Louisiana, I now live in Zachary with my fiancé and our son. My fiancé and I met while attending ULL together. We’ve lived in Zachary for 5 months now. Between Storytime at different libraries, play dates, museum visits, and other baby targeted events around the city, I’m one busy mama! I enjoy family time more than anything. Whether it’s playing in the yard, our Saturday trip to the farmers market, or just being at the table together for dinner.  I make sure that between cooking, cleaning, flash cards, and ABC’s that we always make time for “family time.”

A few Other things I enjoy are Pilates, cooking, walks in the park, “me time”,  and exploring healthy living for my family. We are regulars at Whole Foods Market and the farmers market.  There’s so much fun in teaching my son about fresh foods and where our food comes from.

Being a mom (and stay at home mom) is the most challenging yet rewarding thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also the best, and most important.

Screen shot 2014-05-22 at 11.54.37 PMWhitney is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University with her Bachelor of Interior Design. After a couple of years in the design field she found her home in Baton Rouge, LA. Her passions lie in playground sports, keeping a messy home (much to the dismay of the fiance), drinking lots of caffeine, dancing in the kitchen, getting (well trying to get) her booty in shape, and making people smile. She is working as the creative director for a group of dental clinics. She devotes her time to three things that fall very close to her heart: her little family, her 2 weenie pups, and the urge to never stop creating.

She is getting married in August of 2014 to a guy who is her counter-points. He though a pilot is firmly grounded while she spends most of her time with her head in the clouds. With him comes a 8 year old with more energy and awesome than she knows how to keep up with. Keeping up with Jones has become keeping up with Audrey. She’s a newbie to this mom thing, balancing this whole step-parent versus friend thing, but has found that everything can be fixed by making good bread, butter, and her mom’s “Terry Berry Mayhaw Jelly.” As a tiny little family they make life work with amazingly creative grilled cheese sandwiches, streamers, Steen’s Syrup, and maybe a bubble bath.

You can see the day to day (well almost, kinda, more monthly these days) of all (okay okay most of) her adventures on one of her blogs, Paper Rainbows or I Saw My Mom. Till then she will keep chasing paper rainbows and living the southern narrative.

Baton Rouge MomsI am wife first. Mom second. Photographer third. I try to keep them in that order as best I can. I have two boys who are 21 months apart. I really did not think that one through. My oldest will be 5 this year and my youngest will be 3. My boys are all boy, wild and out of control. If left alone for more than 30 seconds, my boys can make a room look like a war zone.

I am new to the Baton Rouge area. We relocated here for my husband’s job, in April. My husband works at LSU, as a recruiter and instructor for the ROTC department. We are a military family. My husband has been in the army for the last 20 years. I am thankful we have not had to endure a deployment since we have been together.

I am able to work from home. Working from home is such a blessing! Working from home can seem like a joke with kids. I don’t know how I do it, but eventually work gets done. I love photography. It has always been a passion of mine. I worked with film a lot in high school and did not own my first DSLR camera until 2008. I started my business, Rachel Ezzo Portraits, in 2012. I am self taught when it comes to my business, photography and Photoshop. I learned everything I know by watching online tutorials, videos, reading, trial and error and a lot of practice. I am constantly learning, and trying to improve my skills and business. I don’t claim to know it all! I love sunsets. I love them even more when they show up in my photos. Natural light is so important to me, when shooting. I work with children and families. My all time favorite shoot is when I get to work with my newborns. I love cuddling and soothing those sweet babies, into adorable poses. I don’t love it enough to want another baby. Let’s be honest.  My kids are like squirrels on a sugar high.

I was born and raised in upstate New York. I attended college at Liberty University, in Lynchburg Virginia, where I lived for the last 11 years. I have a degree in Psychology. I worked as a counselor with children and teens on a Psychiatric unit for a few years before having my own kids. I met my husband while living in Virginia, who was also from New York. My husband made a list of attributes he wanted in his wife, and named the list his “Rachel List.” He prayed for his Rachel for 7 years. I did not know him until about 3 years after he had been praying. We did not date until 4 years after that. I believe God has a plan. I believe he chose me for my husband, and him for me. I believe God’s ways are higher than my ways and better than anything I could imagine for myself.

December 1, 2013 by Tiany Davis

It’s Christmas time in the Bayou State and Baton Rouge is getting ready for a fais do-do for the holidays! With so many great holiday events happening in and around the Baton Rouge area,  it may seem daunting to pick the ones that are right for your family.  The holidays dont need to be full or packed with activities, they should be a relaxing, fun, time to enjoy family and make memories.

We have put together a few of our favorite events with our Baton Rouge Christmas Bucket list:

Baton Rouge Christmas Events

The following 10 events have made our Baton Rouge Christmas Bucket List:

The Parade is a celebration and a great way to connect with the community. The parade is open to everyone. Typically the parade includes about 80 entries. These entries are a mix of marching bands, celebrities, dance troups, non-profit organizations, and local businesses in seasonal themes.

ZooLights 2013 -November 29 – December 30 Closed Christmas Eve & Christmas Day Open 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This years will ZooLights will include a mile-long trail through the Zoo, more than 50 illuminated display sculptures of animals and traditional holiday displays.

This beloved annual celebration is fun for all ages and has become an enduring holiday tradition for families, who come to Celebration in the Oaks to ride the train or carousel every year. Visitors are treated to a wide range of attractions, from light displays to the walkways lined with dozens of Christmas trees decorated by local school groups. Perennial favorites include the two-mile train ride through glittering light exhibits, the animated Cajun night before Christmas display, and of course, New Orleans’ iconic snowman Mr. Bingle.

Christmas in the Country – Decemeber 6th, 7th & 8th- Nothing says Christmas to an excited child more than a parade, especially a safe small-town one like St. Francisville’s popular Christmas in the Country parade the first Saturday each December, complete with marching bands and decorated floats, Santa resplendent in his sleigh. Millions of tiny white lights trace soaring Victorian trimwork and grace gallery posts to transform the entire town into a veritable winter wonderland for Christmas in the Country, as special activities throughout the extensive National Register-listed downtown Historic District provide fun for the whole family at this celebration of the season, a joyful alternative to mall madness. Pediatric Emergency & Urgent Care for families in the Baton Rouge area.

November 13, 2013 by Tiany Davis

{11/14 Update at the bottom of this post.}

When you become a mom, you earn a medical merit badge of sorts. Whether you’re putting a band-aide on a boo boo, rocking a child with fever or giving your child their 3rd breathing treatment of the night, eventually few things faze you.

Or so I thought…

Thursday afternoon, I found myself in my most feared scenario. Blood curdling screams from little boys almost brought me to my knees; I knew instantly that what I was going to encounter could not be good.

Panic is the enemy, in the race against time. Stay calm and assess the situation.

I ran to my 12 year old, Micah, gripping his arm that was very obviously broken, and dripping with blood. He was calm as a cucumber but looking pale and in shock, he repeated over and over…. “Mama, I’m ok, it’s ok Mama, I’m ok.” while I yelled, “No your not, we need help!” I was kinda frantic, I completely  failed to stay calm and assess the situation. I ran with my boy to my neighbor who is an Emergency Nurse. But he wasn’t home!! More panic and another neighbor came to our rescue as my younger son was on the phone with 911.

I jumped on the phone with 911 as my neighbor held my sons arm to stop the bleeding. I was less than calm on the phone with the poor dispatcher. She was incredibly calm and gave me very clear, simple instructions on how to treat my sons arm until help arrived. The 5 minute call felt like 5 hours, I pleaded with her to get help to us as soon as possible. I honestly thought my son would bleed out at one point, I thought he had cut his wrist, I couldn’t look to see where the cut was and was so thankful when the dispatcher sternly told me not to look or lift the towel from the wound. I would have fainted ya’ll!

The dispatcher proceeded to ask question after question, I didn’t want to answer any questions. I wanted help and I wanted it NOW! Looking back and having gone through that experience, I know now what I should have done differently and I’m mortified by how frantic I was. We live and learn.

Know what you will be asked on a 911 call and prepare to answer the following:

  • Where is the emergency?: The emergency is not always located where you are calling from. Always be aware of your surroundings and where you are. Try to keep a watch out for the road signs, business names and intersections whenever you may travel.
  • Nature of the emergency: Do you require assistance from law enforcement, medical professionals, and/or fire fighters? In certain areas, the dispatcher or a computer will tell you to dial certain numbers to help them know which department to connect you with and whom you should talk to.
  • A detailed, yet concise, description: What happened? How many details do you know? What should have the most importance? In general, the most important thing is why you need assistance (a compound fracture of the arm, for example), followed by what caused you to need assistance (a careless boy who is bleeding from a bone that came through the skin).
  • The phone number of your phone.
  • Location. Give the dispatcher your name and address
  • Listen to the dispatcher and follow orders (get a clean white cloth, wrap it around the cut to stop the bleeding)
  • Do not hang up until instructed to.

I knew that for us, in that moment, an ambulance was the right decision but I asked our Paramedic anyway. Here is what she said…

When should you call for an ambulance?

“Each situation is going to be dependent upon the totality of the circumstances including: nature/severity of injury/illness, general health of patient, distance to nearest treatment center, time of day and transportation availability.

Ask yourself the following questions (if you answer yes to any of them, then call EMS)
1) Is there any possibility that I could die or be permanently disabled from this injury/illness?
2) Do I need to see a doctor now?
3) Will me driving myself to the doctor/ER place myself or anyone else at risk of injury?

If there is any doubt about whether or not you should call an ambulance, you’ve already answered your own question…YES, call an ambulance.

As we entered the ambulance, the paramedic asked me which hospital I wanted to go to, I must have had a look of confusion on my face, because he said, “You want to take him to OLOL because your son will more than likely need surgery and they will have an orthopedic surgeon at OLOL… right?” To which I nodded yes and we were off.

If you ever have a major emergency and need to take your child to a hospital, go to OLOL. OLOL is Baton Rouge’s Only Pediatric Emergency Room.

816_imagePreparing to Go to the ER

It’s important to know your child’s medical history – allergies, past illnesses, injuries, surgeries,or chronic conditions. You may know this medical history by heart. But consider writing it down so it’s handy if you feel flustered in the chaos of the emergency. As I did. And making a written record readily available at home will allow anyone caring for your child – such as a babysitter – to provide it if your child is seen at the ER.

From the moment we arrived at OLOL Pediatric Emergency, the staff, doctors, nurses and Child Life Specialists were incredibly warm, sensitive and thorough, explaining every detail of each procedure as it happened.

OLOL mission statement:

“At Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital our patients and their families are cared for with dignity, respect and compassion – where advanced pediatric medical treatment is delivered with sincere love, affection and appreciation for children and their special needs.”

We were incredibly blessed to have the Orthopedic Surgeon available and ready to take Micah in for surgery within an hour of our arrival. We spent 3 days at the hospital and they took amazing care of Micah, regulating fevers, high blood pressure and a very sick tummy from pain meds.

The outpouring of prayers, messages and well wishes from our friends and family kept our spirits up and strengthened our faith. We could feel your prayers, friends!! We are grateful for each and every one of them.

We are home now, pain is minimal and we are done with the heavy duty pain meds. Another blessing, he broke his left arm, he can do his schoolwork!  See update below.

While not every emergency calls for an ambulance, many of them do happen in the evening hours or on holidays. We spent last Christmas at Urgent Care, but that’s another story. If you’ve no health care insurance of any sort – there are easy e111 applications you can fill out to get started.

Here is a list of some of the best Urgent Care facilities for children… (if you know of more or have recommendations, please leave them in the comments below!)

UPDATE: We had an impromptu check up today 11/14 and Micah’s arm is oozing / draining so we he will be back in for surgery first thing in the morning. We would greatly appreciate prayers for speedy healing of his arm. I’m not sure how much more this mama’s heart can take. All I want to do is swallow this 12 year old boy up into my arms and protect him with every once of my being. Looking at him in recovery after surgery brought me back to when he was a baby, and I felt like I was looking at my 6 month old again. I wanted to make it all better and hold him, tightly. Motherhood… not for the faint of heart.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering how he broke his arm so severely, he was doing this (see video). And, yes, we did tell him NOT to do this.

Hello Baton Rouge Moms!

It’s BRM launch day!!! If you have yet to do so, please take a moment to meet the ladies behind the blog, on our contributors page. Tiffany, Maggie and I are local bloggers that have been supporting moms online for many years.
