According to the 2010 U.S. Census, over 16 million American children live in poverty, making hunger a daily challenge for families in need. In Louisiana, 27 percent of school-aged children are in poverty, or 212,904 potential students. The rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is tied with the state average of 27 percent. While the numbers are staggering, there are simple ways that each of us can give back to our community and make a difference.
General Mills, Kellogg’s, Emerald and Kettle Chips have joined forces to make it simple for communities to provide basic resources for students through in-store donations. The Snacks for Students program is part of SIMPLE Giving, a Champions for Kids program that seeks to make it simple for shoppers to purchase and donate items children need.
Baton Rouge Moms has partnered with Champions for Kids and the Big Buddy Program to donate snacks for students in the Baton Rouge community. All donations made at the Siegen Lane Walmart on North Mall Dr. will stay in the local community and be donated to the Big Buddy Program in Baton Rouge.
A fundamental challenge facing many communities is how to support youth who are economically, educationally, or emotionally disadvantaged. The Big Buddy Program seeks to create opportunities for the community to empower and guide these children to brighter futures.
The Snacks for Students program is the first of several campaigns to launch nationally, with the goal to provide resources for more than 10 million children in 2015. Champions for Kids makes it simple to give kids in your community the resources they need to thrive. Since 2004, Champions for Kids has served more than 5.4 million children across all 50 states through in-store donation campaigns, service projects and community events.
Through March 15th, the Baton Rouge community can purchase snacks for children and place them inside the designated donation bin found near customer service at the Siegen Lane Walmart on North Mall Drive. All donations made in-store will stay in the local community and be distributed to our Champion for Kids, the Big Buddy Program.
In addition, Champions for Kids, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Emerald and Kettle Chips will provide 13 awards, totaling $45,000, to participating youth-based organizations based on the total number of donated items collected in each store.
Our goal is to give Baton Rouge moms the support they need to be the best moms they can be – and to encourage them to, in turn, give back to each other and to the community at large. We hope you will join us as we support Big Buddy Program with after school snacks for the kids! This is a great way to get the kids involved in giving back!

Snacks for Students sounds like an amazing program and something I would be proud in supporting! I like that shoppers can purchase items to donate and leave them in the drop box. Sometimes thats easier than giving a monetary donation.
