Atomic Burger – Clean Eats in Baton Rouge

June 5, 2019 by Rochelle Calhoun

So my husband’s birthday was on Saturday, but because he’s awesome, we began the celebration on Thursday night. We maintain strictly, clean eating habits, but his birthday was a good opportunity to take a little break, while still allowing him to enjoy his favorite activity, eating. After eating at his favorite local breakfast hangout, I decided to take him to Atomic Burger for lunch. It’s a new fast-casual restaurant located on Burbank and Lee. They’ve been open for a few weeks and we’d heard rave reviews about them so we were excited.

Atomic Burger

So let’s talk about why this place is a big deal for us. We make every effort to avoid chemical processing in every area of our lives, especially our food. Sure there are lots of restaurants where you can get a hamburger and fries, but we value eateries that take pride in the sourcing and preparation of their menu items. Atomic Burger seems to do just that. Their beef is ground fresh in house, they slice their own potatoes, and their produce is freshly prepared. In addition, they have a variety of options for those with dietary restrictions, and that was the cherry on top.

Atomic Burger

The design of the restaurant has a very retro, yet modern style to it, kind of like the In-and-Out Burger restaurants back home in LA. There were a few guests in line, but we didn’t mind the wait because we could smell the awesomeness as soon as we walked in the door. What really impressed us was the Gluten Free (Products made without wheat, spelt, kamut, farro, durum, bulgar, semolina, barley, rye, and triticale) and Keto Friendly (low-carb/high fat) Cauliflower bun and lettuce wrap options. Our family has very strict dietary guidelines due to my wheat allergy and our son’s eczema that’s triggered by wheat, dairy, and eggs. There aren’t many places where we can all enjoy a full meal without too many substitutions, so we appreciate their consideration of those with alternative dietary needs.

The Cauliflower Bun and Keto options are a nice touch for those with dietary restrictions. They also offer veggie and turkey burgers.

Atomic BurgerWe both ordered the Atomic Burger with grilled onions and Cauliflower bun, and a side of fries to share. Although they do have shakes, our lactose intolerance just couldn’t handle the dairy. However, their shakes aren’t just the usual ice cream in a cup type shakes. They’re actually chilled to order using liquid nitrogen (yep, you read that correctly). I promise you I stood there in a daze, fascinated by the process! One day, I may live on the wild side and try one. But I digress…

By the time we ordered, picked up a few condiments from the bar, and found a table on the enclosed patio, our food was ready. Now before I tell you about the burger, let’s discuss this condiment bar. The hubs and I are both suckers for condiments. (Like seriously! Our fridge contains an ungodly amount of them) So you can just imagine the joy we felt in our hearts when we saw toppings like Roasted Garlic Aioli (our fave), Truffle Mayo, and Sriracha Mayo! We were in condiment heaven! Okay, so back to the burger. The Cauliflower bun was a pleasant alternative to the typical lettuce wrap. It had the texture of a fried egg and didn’t fall apart or get all messy like a lettuce wrap either. I really don’t like the taste of cauliflower, but I honestly couldn’t even tell it was the main ingredient.

Dip the fry! Trust me! The Garlic Aioli is magical!
Atomic Burger

The patties had that signature beefiness that you want on a burger, and it honestly reminded me of In-and-Out burger as well. Especially with the grilled onions. The fries, (drool) were homemade. No one had to tell me they were freshly sliced because I could tell! They had a soft, fleshy potato center and a slight crisp on the outside. Perfect! You just can’t get that flavor or texture from frozen fries. And I must say, the Garlic Aioli made a perfect dip.

Rochelle CalhounAfter finishing the burger, although I was full, I wasn’t “loosen my pants” stuffed, and that was a good thing. The cauliflower bun gave me the satisfaction of a “real” burger without an actual wheat derived bun. I can dig it! While eating burgers and fries are not our typical household meal, it’s great to have options available where we can enjoy a burger made with fresh ingredients instead of all of the heavily processed, chemically altered ones.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and our food. So much so, that we’re adding it to our list of places to go in Baton Rouge. Have you tried Atomic Burger yet? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook. Until next time…

RaceTrac Breakfast Grab-and-Go for the Whole Family – Everyone Wins!

August 12, 2018 by Tiany Davis

Summer break is officially over which means back to school and back to the chaos of rushed mornings and Baton Rouge traffic! For those busy mornings when you need a grab and go option for breakfast, we might have you covered! Our family made a stop at our local RaceTrac to try out their new limited RaceTrac breakfast sandwich made with Kellogg’s Eggo Waffles, in all stores now through November 7. The Eggo breakfast sandwich includes maple syrup, sausage, egg and cheese all stacked together between two classic Eggo Waffles.

We have four growing boys and they love/need a hearty breakfast; they wanted to try this new breakfast sandwich that sounded questionable but kinda yummy. They loved it, honestly, we all enjoyed our grab-and-go breakfasts, there was something for everyone.

RaceTrac Breakfast

RaceTrac Breakfast

My husband tried the chicken buttermilk biscuit made with Tyson chicken breasts, he gave it two thumbs up, sandwiches are made in-house with hand-selected, high-quality ingredients and assembled fresh in-store every day.  My favorite, the ham, egg and cheese croissant as well as the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit, among others, are all cooked throughout the morning and made available in the hot case for a FRESH, easy grab-and-go breakfast all morning long.

RaceTrac’s “Crazy Good Coffee” bar offers a variety of blends of fresh brewed coffee, including 100 percent Hazelnut, Regular, Columbian, Guatemalan, Decaf and Dark Roast. RaceTrac’s coffee bar also features cappuccinos, iced coffee, hot teas and hot chocolate.

Simple Steps To Pamper Mom This Mother’s Day – Holly Clegg

May 10, 2018 by Guest Contributor

What do you get your mom for Mother’s Day when she deserves the world but you can’t quite afford that? Moms do everything for us since the day we are born and they only get one day a year to be really recognized for that. And on that one-day, they are still the ones who usually end up planning whatever event you do that day! I usually make our favorite make-ahead easy brunch casserole from KITCHEN 101 and serve with Cheese Grits but this year I have a different plan!

Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day, I have decided to pamper my mom like the Queen she is, follow these simple steps so that you can too.  After you get home from your Mother’s Day brunch, party, or cookout it’s time for your mom to relax. Waiting for her in the refrigerator will be delicious Chocolate Truffles dipped in White Chocolate from Too Hot In the Kitchen along with an Avocado Carrot Cream Mask. Both are homemade by you with all of the love in the world.  And, there’s even a Chocolate Mask too-the ultimate pampering chocoholic favorite!

Mother’s Day

The Chocolate Truffles are extremely easy to make and contain only 3 ingredients. The best part is that you don’t have to tell your mom that. Let her think that you slaved over the stove all day to make her these authentic French truffles because you love her that much.

Although the truffles are very impressive, the most impressive part of the gift will be the facemask. This Avocado Carrot Cream mask is a really “good-for-you” facemask to pamper your mom with. The avocados are rich in vitamin E, which creates the best moisturizer, while the carrots (high in beta-carotene and antioxidants) help to reduce dry, flaky skin. Why go out and buy a facemask when you can make one and know exactly what is in it? This facemask can provide some good quality time between you and your mom, as well as an amazing refreshing feeling when she takes it off.

Both of these recipes can be stored and enjoyed by your mom all week long. The final step to your perfect Mother’s Day present is to buy “Too Hot in the Kitchen.” This cookbook contains more fun, simple spa recipes as well as many more fun and sassy recipes like these to keep your mom’s Mother’s Day going all year long.

Two of my favorite DIY skincare masks!

Popular New Orleans restaurant Dat Dog is coming to LSU

March 14, 2018 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Dat Dog, the popular hot dog franchise based out of New Orleans, is coming to Baton Rouge just in time for football season! Hot dogs, toppings and more… oh my!

Dat Dog

The Advocate reports two franchisees of the immensely popular ‘Dat Dog’ in New Orleans have signed a lease to open the chain’s first Baton Rouge location.

The report says the plan is for the eatery to open in the Arlington Marketplace near LSU, next door to a brand new Rouses, in time for the college football season. The franchisees, two New Orleans attorneys, say they also hope to have a Dat Dog food truck open for tailgates, catering and other events.

Dat Dog’s menu spans traditional and unusual franks, like kielbasa, bratwurst, alligator, crawfish, and duck. With 30 toppings and several different sausages, the combinations are endless at Dat Dog. They even serve vegan and vegetarian hot dogs, something for everyone!  The buns are notably vegan, and there are lettuce wrap options for the gluten-free.

From the folks at Dat Dog…

Dat Dog is a place where amazing and affordable food, fun-loving staff, and bright colors provide you with a sanctuary of joy from the moment you cross its threshold. Combining the soul of Louisiana with the sophistication of Europe, Dat Dog’s artfully crafted cuisine of Hot Dogs, sausages (including vegetarian, vegan and fish), burgers and chicken (fried, grilled or tossed in buffalo sauce) are a thing of beauty. The over 30 toppings available at no extra charge allow you to create your very own “jazz improvisation in a bun”.

Dat Dog

This is one comfort food many of us find hard to give up but if hot dogs are not your thing, the restaurant also branches out beyond just hot dogs, with burgers, chicken sandwiches, and fries. The Baton Rouge location may offer some Baton Rouge-specific items as well.
