Woman’s Hospital Mental Health Unit Opening in Baton Rouge

September 18, 2023 by Tiany Davis

Great news for Baton Rouge moms: Woman’s Hospital will open Louisiana’s first inpatient mental health unit for pregnant and postpartum women in September 2024.

Pregnancy and having a baby can trigger intense emotions, from excitement and happiness to being overwhelmed and anxious. Women face hormonal and physical changes and the new responsibilities of caring for a child that can contribute to these intense emotions and the chance for postpartum depression.

Woman's Hospital - Mental Health Unit in Baton Rouge

Woman’s Hospital Opening Mental Health Unit in Baton Rouge

Maternal mental health conditions are a leading cause of maternal mortality in the U.S. and affect one in five women, yet those conditions go untreated 75% of the time, Woman’s says.

“A perinatal mental health unit at Woman’s Hospital will be designed to address these issues as we strive to move the needle on maternal health and mortality rates,” Cheri Barker Johnson, Woman’s senior vice president of patient care and chief nursing officer, says in a prepared announcement.

The planned 10-bed unit, which officials say will be one of “several” of its kind nationwide, is scheduled to open next September.

Woman's Hospital - Mental Health Unit in Baton Rouge

Some eye-opening facts: Anxiety, perinatal and postpartum depression, and birth-related PTSD affect one in five women during pregnancy or childbirth, according to the CDC. Shockingly, 75% of these cases go untreated, and mental health conditions contribute to maternal mortality.

Rene Ragas, President and CEO of Woman’s Hospital, highlights their commitment to comprehensive perinatal care. “By meeting the needs of women experiencing pregnancy or postpartum-related mental health conditions, Woman’s Hospital advances our mission of improving the health of women and infants,” he says.

Postpartum Mental Health Statistics:

  • 1 in 5 women experience mental health conditions during pregnancy or postpartum.
  • 75% of these women do not receive treatment for their mental health issues.
  • Maternal mental health conditions, including anxiety, perinatal and postpartum depression, and birth-related PTSD, are among the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Mental health conditions are a leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States.
  • Pregnancy and postpartum mental health challenges contribute significantly to maternal morbidity rates.
  • Access to specialized perinatal mental health care is limited, with only a few dedicated units in the United States.
  • Support and treatment for pregnant and postpartum women with mental health conditions are crucial for their well-being and the health of their infants.

This mental health unit is a vital step toward better maternal health outcomes, offering support and hope for moms in need. It’s a stride toward a safer and healthier future for mothers and their little ones.

“As the largest provider of maternity care for women in Louisiana, it’s our responsibility to address all aspects of perinatal health,” says Rene Ragas, president and CEO of Woman’s.

Louisiana Wildfires: How to Help

August 26, 2023 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Numerous Louisiana wildfires are currently raging across the state; the enormity of this crisis is evident in the heartbreaking scenes unfolding in Beauregard, Vernon, and Sabine Parishes in Southwest Louisiana.

Dozens of homes lie in ruins, multiple firefighters have sustained injuries and mandatory evacuation mandates continue to be enforced. More than 30,000 acres have burned since local fire departments, volunteers, and the National Guard started battling the fires Tuesday morning.

Louisiana Wildfires: How to Help

United Way of Southwest Louisiana has launched a Fire Relief Fund to support individuals and families. 100% of the proceeds are directed to distributing relief funds according to the community’s most urgent needs and assisting firefighters with needs. Donations can be made at unitedwayswla.org/fireswla or by texting FIRESWLA to 40403.

The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office is doing a drive for the following items for the Beauregard Parish Firefighters: Water, pop-up canopy tents, and high-velocity fans.

If you are interested in giving please bring donations to 415 W. Cotton St., Ville Platte. Donations can be made 24/7 by Aug. 30. Every little bit will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to call 337-363-2161 with any questions.

Dewith Carrier State Representative District 32 is collecting donations of Liquid IV Hydration packets to distribute to first responders and volunteers in Beauregard Parish. If you can help, contact the district office at 318-335-0206, and arrangements will be made to pick up the donations.

New Step Outreach, DeRidder, is making and distributing snack kits for first responders. Contact the organization for more information, 337-226-5602.

Water, Gatorade, and non-perishable snacks for first responders can be dropped off at the Westside Fire Station in DeRidder, 102 Wilson Street. Firefighters will get it to the areas in need. This is to limit the traffic in and around the response area.

Shelters

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at United Methodist at 406 W. Shirley St. in DeRidder. Cots are available.  Dry Creek Baptist Camp, Highway 113, is also open for shelter.  The Beauregard Parish Fair Grounds are also open for equipment, RVs, and campers. To access, use the north gate by the baseball fields.

Louisiana Renaissance Festival – Know Before You Go

August 8, 2023 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

The Louisiana Renaissance Festival is back for 2023 and Theme Weekends have been announced! Every autumn, the Louisiana Renaissance Festival creates the English “Village of Albright,” with more than 600 artisans, entertainers, and educational demonstrations welcoming you to the best parts of the 16th century.

Albright has a magical ambiance: an adventurous, exciting, and romantic atmosphere. Choose from dozens of professional performers, more than 50 shows, and a plethora of demonstrations every day on a dozen stages. Search a hundred booths for unique handmade creations.

2023 Dates

NOV: 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26

DEC: 2, 3, 9 & 10

(Rain or Shine)

Louisiana Renaissance Festival Themes Weekends

Let this year’s themes inspire you for 6 weekends of adventure at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival!
Nov. 4 & 5: Romance & Masquerade — Romance is always celebrated at the RenFest, but on our opening weekend, it takes center stage! Add a little mystery, if you choose, by donning a mask that hides (or reveals!) your inner self.
Nov. 11 & 12: Viking — Get in touch with your inner barbarian and join the clamoring hordes of merrymakers on our second weekend. Fighting and pillaging are not allowed, but expect some good-natured berserking.
Nov. 18 & 19: Celtic — Celts were found all over Europe (even Spain and France), but most people think of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Expect to see lots of kilts, some woad, and maybe even a leprechaun or two!
Nov. 24, 25, & 26: Myths & Magic — Set your imagination free! Legendary beings, cosplayers, and time travelers flock to our village on this fantastic 3-day weekend that includes the Friday after Thanksgiving. We can’t wait to see who you are!
Dec. 2 & 3: Pirates — Batten down the hatches and polish your peg leg; the village will be invaded by buccaneers and scallywags! Be sure to join this happy melee — a Jolly Roger time will be had by all!
Dec. 9 & 10: Fireworks — We end the season with a bang! Spend your day seeing your favorite shows and people, and making last-minute holiday purchases (we have the perfect gift for everyone on your list!); after sundown, spread a blanket and watch one of the best private fireworks shows in the region!

My family visited last year, here are some tips we think you should know before you go:

Louisiana Renaissance Festival – Know Before You Go

  • Remember to get cash before you go. Many vendors can take a card, but it’s hit and miss. There are ATMs, but there are fees to them. Plus, cash can be helpful for budgeting as well!
  • Be ready to wait in line. The lines for food ranged from a handful of patrons to dozens deep, and nearly all the interactive activities had decent lines at all times. If you have impatient littles, this is something you’ll want to plan for.
  • The mead hits hard. Mead is a historic honey wine that can be purchased at the adult tavern near the glass blowing demo. But fair warning: it’s like a Medieval Hand Grenade and WILL sneak up on you…not that I would know…
  • If you like a vendor, take their card! Even if you don’t end up buying something from them, you can still support them with a social media like, follow, and share!

Louisiana Renaissance Festival - Know Before You Go

  • There is a handful of rides, but they’re all period-accurate. No Ferris wheels or roller coasters here, but the rides that ARE there are lots of fun! There’s a sea monster boat that rocks forward and back, pony rides, and whatever this wind-up Maypole contraption is called:
  • Check the website for the daily schedule. Like music festivals, there are several shows going on at different stages all day, and you’ll want to plan your day a bit to avoid missing anything you’re interested in (our favorites were jousting and the glass blowing!).

Credit: Louisiana Renaissance Festival

  • Wear comfortable shoes. And while you’re at it, wear shoes that can be washed/wiped down. You’ll spend the vast majority of your day walking around a dusty dirt path that turns to a muddy dirt path if it rains.
  • Check the website for each weekend’s theme. For example, our weekend was Heroes and Pirates Weekend; the costumes were amazing! Other themes include Celtic Weekend, Time Travelers Weekend, and Romance Weekend.
  • Dress up! Or don’t. There’s no pressure to dress in period-accurate costume, and conversely, no outfit is unwelcome.  We saw faeries, queens, knights, anime characters, pirates, jesters, comic book characters…but there were plenty of festival-goers not in costume.

Free Summer Meals in Baton Rouge – IDEA Schools

May 30, 2023 by Tiany Davis

With summer upon us, many children eagerly await the freedom from school routines, ready to embrace weeks of fun and relaxation. However, for numerous students in Baton Rouge, summer break may present an unintended consequence: limited access to nutritious meals. Fortunately, IDEA School is bringing back its Free Summer Meals program that ensures that every child receives a wholesome breakfast and lunch, regardless of their economic background or where they attend school.

Free Summer Meals in Baton Rouge

Free Summer Meals for Kids – Baton Rouge

Breakfast and lunch will be served at all campuses Monday through Friday for kids 18 and younger, regardless of whether they attend an IDEA school.

For many children, the end of the school year signifies the end of regular, nutritious meals provided through school lunch programs. It poses a significant challenge for families struggling to provide enough food during summer. IDEA School’s free lunch and breakfast initiative guarantees that every child can concentrate on learning, playing, and growing without worrying about hunger.

Food insecurity is an issue facing families in communities across the country; nearly one in five children in America lives in households that struggle to put food on the table. Louisiana has the country’s fourth-highest rate of children living in poverty. You might never know this because child hunger in America is often invisible; it could be friends, neighbors, and even family members that are struggling with food insecurity.

This program serves as a beacon of hope for families struggling to make ends meet, ensuring their children have access to at least two wholesome meals daily. Moreover, IDEA School’s summer program partners with local organizations and food banks to source fresh and nutritious ingredients, further enhancing the overall quality of the meals provided.

FREE Summer Meal Times & Locations

Summer meals provided will include breakfast and lunch for kids 18 and under. The program begins Tuesday, May 30, and ends Friday, July 21.

Breakfast: 7:30 am – 9 am
Lunch: 11 am – 1 pm
Please note that all meals must be eaten within the school’s cafeteria.

Tunica Hills and Tunica Falls/Clark Creek – Outdoor Adventures

April 11, 2023 by Guest Contributor

Do you know the difference between Tunica Hills and Tunica Falls/Clark Creek? Clark Creek is sometimes called Tunica Falls; hence, Tunica Hills and Tunica Falls are often confused. However, if you’re in the mood for chasing waterfalls, trails, and adventure, both parks are worth a visit.

Tunica Hills

As the mom of a young, very active boy, I wake up most weekends brainstorming what sort of adventures we can get into together. We both love the smell of the great outdoors, so when I brought up the idea of a hike, his attention was instantly piqued.

A little over an hour from Baton Rouge

Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area is a little over an hour’s drive from Baton Rouge through the beautiful historic town of St. Francisville. A bit of a hidden treasure, it’s a perfect day in nature for energetic explorers with miles of hiking trails through an upland hardwood forest that blankets the Tunica Hills.

Tunica Hills and Tunica Falls/Clark Creek

As you make the turn onto Old Tunica Road and start the ascent, you can feel an instant drop in temperature as the altitude increases. If available, I highly recommend an SUV or truck since access to the trails is a bit bumpy once you enter the park area. Parking is a bit tricky at some of the trailheads and having 4-wheel drive is a plus. On the main road, there are several trails to choose from.

Take Tunica Hills Trail C for the kiddos

I decided on the trail with the least foot traffic, which happened to be Trail C; I later found out it was an excellent trail to start with, especially if you have kiddos in tow. If you don’t have hiking boots, wear a pair of tennis shoes that you don’t mind getting a little muddy. The terrain has some downed trees and a few steep inclines and declines, so having proper footwear is a must!

We hiked for about 2 miles before we turned back as it was pretty muddy from recent rainfall. It was exciting to climb over some smaller trees that had fallen across the path and test our balancing abilities! If you take a quick water break, mid-trail, you will notice several spots where you will see some very big drop-offs.

Things to Know Before You Go from Louisianatravel.com

  • You’ll find a nature trail with designated hiking trails accessible from Old Tunica Road on the South Tract, but don’t expect overdeveloped trails. Check out this Tunica Hills map for boundaries, designated camping area, check station locations, and trail locations. You can only camp at the designated camping area on Parker Road, and only tent-only camping is permitted.
  • All visitors must use self-clearing permits for all activities on Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). Get your free permit at check station kiosks on the WMA. Additionally, all WMA visitors ages 16 to 59 must possess either a valid Louisiana hunting/fishing license, or Wild Louisiana Stamp. Licenses can be purchased from any hunting and fishing license vendor in the state, as well as over the phone (1-888-765-2602) or online.

Clark Creek / Tunica Falls

The majestic Clark Creek Natural Area in southwestern Mississippi is one of the Magnolia State’s most beautiful outdoor treasures. Comprising more than 700 acres, it is highlighted by some 50 waterfalls, from 10 to 30 feet in height.  Clark Creek Natural Area is just over the Louisiana state line in Mississippi, at 366 Ft Adams Pond Rd, Woodville, MS 39669.

Clark Creek Admission

A day use entry fee of $2.00 per person is charged for use of the park – Cash only on the honor system. Five years of age and under are free.

Bathrooms

Amenities available on site include a restroom and water fountain at entrance of the park.

Waterfalls? In Mississippi?

The Clark Creek Natural Area protects more than 700 acres of pine and hardwood forest amid a landscape of steep-sided bluffs, rolling hummocks, and trickling waterfalls. There are about 4.5 miles of primitive and improved trails that visit some of the park’s waterfalls and heritage trees. Visitors discover a variety of colorful migrating and resident birds; invertebrates; poisonous snakes; a rare land snail; the Federally endangered Carolina magnolia vine; and the State endangered fish, the Southern redbelly face.

What to pack in your backpack:

  • Small first aide kit
  • Bathroom kit (there are no bathrooms on the trails)
  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • A change of clothes
  • A bag for muddy or wet clothes
  • Binoculars
  • Large bamboo stick to ward off any unwelcome reptilian visitors.

Most of the trail was well shaded, but if you stopped for too long, the horseflies were ready and waiting to take nibbles when they could. All in all, the scenery and the drive up to the trail were a much-needed break from our everyday activities! No cell phone service – so a great way to unplug.

Clark CreekMy name is Evangeline Pugliese but all my favorite people call me Lene (Lee-knee). I am an as-needed nurse with Ochsner’s BR OB/GYN department. I’m also an independent advocate with an organic farm-to-table CBD company out of Wilmington, NC.
