Cox Smart Home Tour – an easier, safer, more productive home life.

September 28, 2017 by Tiany Davis

Life today is more mobile, more connected and more immediate than ever. For moms, it can also feel more hectic as we strive to get it all done and remember all of the things. Today’s family has at least six home devices connected to the Internet, by 2022, it’s expected that the number will grow to 50 connected devices in the home! Last week, I had the opportunity to tour the Cox Smart Home at The Preserve at Harveston and experience firsthand how smart devices continue to modify and form how we connect, live, work and learn.

Moms have busy lives, we are multitasking beasts and keep multiple running lists in our heads at all times. However, trying to remember all of the things while juggling all of the things can become overwhelming and physically and emotionally taxing. My greatest takeaway from the Cox Smart Home tour, that we are not utilizing technology to its fullest potential.  There are a plethora of smart resources and services available to us to help make family life easier, safer and more productive. Picture a home full of assistants ready to help make family living run more smoothly in every living space of your home, or when you’re away! As I entered the Smart Home I was introduced to Cox Homelife, Cox Homelife lets you protect, monitor and control your home at the touch of a finger from anywhere, anytime, providing safety and peace of mind.

Cox Homelife

Cox Homelife safety and security

The safety of my family and my home is of greatest concern when I’m away from home. After leaving the house I will often second guess if I have left lights on or off, if I turned off appliances or if I locked the doors. Homelife mobile app allows you to arm your security remotely or control your thermostat, lights, door locks and even small appliances.

Cox Smart Home Devices

Cox Homelife smart devices

In the kitchen, food blogger and cookbook author Whitney Bond showed how a number of smart devices can be used to make life a lot easier.  Imagine a coffee brewer that lets you create a personal brew profile by adjusting the pre-soak time, temperature and brewing time. The smart coffee machine will even text you when your coffee is ready to drink. And when it comes to dinner, the WeMo Smart Slow Cooker can adjust cooking time and temperature using the free WeMo app from your Smart device delivering total peace of mind when you’re away from home. Your furry family members have an assistant too, the Feed and Go Feeder lets you watch and feed your pets no matter where you are.

Cox Smart Home Devices

Cox Panoramic Wi-Fi and “G1GABLAST”

Cooking, video games, live podcasting, video conferencing and even cleaning {the miraculous Roomba} all work simultaneously on the same internet source with Panoramic Wi-Fi providing wall-to-wall Internet coverage and “G1GABLAST” offering speeds 100 times faster than the average speed in the U.S. today. The smart home also showcased a smart flowerpot that monitors and waters itself, an electric toothbrush that gives feedback on your brushing habits, a Sensor Mirror Pro that shows you how your makeup will look in natural sunlight and over 50,000 color variations and Amazon Dash buttons that restock home essentials with one simple click.

In the guest room I met Jason Yang, a world-renowned violinist and composer, he relies on high-speed Internet for all aspects of his work. Jason uses Skype to teach international students and stream live seminars in high definition to his students and fans. The way we learn, teach and communicate has evolved, technology has impacted almost every aspect of life today, and education is no exception.

Remote health monitoring

The Owner’s retreat introduced us to a remote health-monitoring by Trapollo LLC. Two years ago my mother became very ill and moved in with our family so we could help care for her. The ability to remotely consult with my mother’s physician would have made all the difference on days where we were unsure of her vitals and whether she needed to take a trip to the ER. Powered by the internet, the remote health-monitoring system connects patients with their clinicians and physicians anytime, day or night, allowing them to manage their health condition without having to leave their home. Changing the way healthcare is delivered. You can watch the remote health process in action in my video of the Home Smart Tour below.

Cox Contour

Another favorite resource in the home was Cox Contour, Contour gets you to your favorite content faster and easier with features like voice control, predictive search, TV apps and some amazing parental controls. Parents can create an account for each member of the family offering a more personalized viewing experience – up to 8 household viewers can create and access their own personalized profiles. Parents can customize access to content based on their kids’ age, restrict recordings and block television programs by channel, rating or time of day. Somehow, time watching TV or playing on electronics always gets away from me and before I know it our boys have been on for an hour. Cox Contour also lets parents limit the time periods children can watch TV

Technology and smart living are here to stay with new advances created every day, we might as well utilize them and allow them to help make life easier.  Cox Homelife along with Panoramic Wi-Fi and G1GABLAST offers families a sense of security and peace of mind in and out of the home. These are game-changing technology-driven trends that will surely make life easier, safer and offer our families a new normal to how we live and learn. There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow!

Cox Connect2Compete – getting more families online.

September 12, 2016 by Tiany Davis

Today’s kids are considered digital natives, they are growing up surrounded by and immersed in digital media. As a homeschool mom, not a day {or an hour} goes by that we do not turn to Google to get quick answers on just about any topic or question. The world’s encyclopedia is as weightless, free and instantly accessible as Wikipedia. Using the internet, you can learn a new language or delve into the depths of metaphysics with just a click of a mouse. The Web has unlocked the keys to a worldwide virtual school, a plethora of information and connectivity. Our boys use the internet to access their lessons, research and watch tutorials on just about anything they want to learn how to do. In much the same way, students are increasingly using the internet to keep up with homework assignments, to do research for school, and to connect with teachers and classmates.

Teachers are using digital tools in the classroom more and more to improve learning, assign online homework, post grades and email parents about student progress or needs. In today’s digital world,  home internet connection is a necessity.

Cox Baton Rouge

It’s hard to imagine living without the luxury of high speed internet, it’s something many of us take for granted. Unfortunately, too many are under-connected; an estimated one in three Louisiana residents does not have access at home.  Students who don’t have internet at home struggle to keep up. Especially now, after the recent floods, I would imagine that many more children will go un-connected.

Having internet access at home is essential in helping students connect and succeed in the classroom and beyond. Living without internet access makes it hard for children to explore topics and ideas that interest them personally — what I, as a homeschool mom, call interest-driven learning. It’s easy to see that living without internet access can cause major learning gaps for children. Cox is working to alleviate this struggle.

Cox Connect2Compete Baton Rouge

Cox understands this new reality and works in the communities they serve to provide affordable internet and devices to low-income students and their families. Cox is striving to narrow the digital divide with Connect2Compete,  a discounted Internet service available to qualifying households in our area.

Cox Baton Rouge

There are many families in our area who want internet access but can’t afford the equipment or can’t afford the monthly fees. If you or someone you know is eligible for Connect2Compete, you need only apply online at www.connect2compete.org/Cox or call 855-222-3252 and get connected!

20 things I have learned about Louisiana so far…

February 21, 2015 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

We have been here almost a year, now.

Moved from Virginia after 11 years, but originally I am from upstate New York.

What I have learned about Louisiana so far:

Louisiana

When you first arrive your neighbor will call your husband “Braa” which means “Bro” and offer him a beer. That neighbor will probably have been drinking since he got home at 2pm and not be wearing a shirt.

SouthernHe will also greet you with a kiss on the cheek that smells like beer every time he sees you. He will prove to be the nicest guy you ever met, though.

This neighbor will also appear from the bushes that are like 3 houses down and scream your name and wave to you while shirtless until you acknowledge him.

Same neighbor will have stories on how they survived Gustav, hunkered down under the carport.

If someone lives in North Louisiana and moved to South Louisiana or vice versa, they refer to themselves as being from out of state.louisiana-fleur-de-lis-

If your family lives in Shreveport, they are considered to be far away. 4 hours (a day trip) as compared to my family in NY which is like 20 hour drive. I try not to be confused when I hear this.

You basically have to provide a blood sample to get your kid into public school around here.

Public schools have uniforms. Never seen that before.

Everything can be a party here. For example, if you car breaks down, why not drink to the occasion?

You can buy any type of liquor you want at Walmart or get a drink through a drive through, and legally have it in your car as long as there is no straw in it. Say what?brt_10101890749006188_1483194387_n

If you want a pet, it must be adopted and not considered bought, although you will have to pay for it.

The fleur-de-lis, (Yes I had to look that up on Google to know how to say and spell it right) will appear everywhere, in peoples homes as décor or on grocery bags or on shop signs, as place-mats and on iron gates. I don’t think any other state has a symbol that is used as much as this. I could be wrong.

School will be closed a whole week for Mardi Gras. That is a whole other thing. Mardi Gras.

Your kids will leave Mardi Gras family parades looking like a pimp.

If it’s a little cold the heat is on. If it is a little warm the AC is on. That thing is always running.

You have what Boudinis called a “Boil” where you eat food that still has eyes on it and you all eat with your hands from the same pile. Barbaric.

There is gumbo and jambalaya. I still have no idea what the difference is.

If you want to get your kids attention, you say “Come see” instead of “Come here”

Boudin looks like sausage but its not.

If you are on the LSU beach (lake) and some people that were paddle boarding tell you they saw gators in the water, pretend not to be alarmed because they aren’t.

If you are from here, you never leave here. There are like 9 generations of your family here. Roots go deep.

Big BowsThe pediatricians will say “BOBO” for “Boo-boo.”

Bobo is a clown where I come from.

Mosquitoes will appear as much as the Fleur-de-lis symbol.

Lastly, I have to mention smock dresses, big bows and all things embroidered.

How does your garden grow?

June 7, 2014 by Guest Contributor

A story about letting your soul shine & maybe eating your veggies…

I sit at the table and stare at my plate. It is covered in rice, gravy, pork-chops. You know the plate of a good ole “south of I-10” kind of girl. To combat that, I drag myself into the my gym clothes and hit the pavement. I work out purely so I can eat whatever I want and, at the bare minimum, stay one size. Lately the part of the yard where the garden used to be started mocking me.

When I met my Ben, in his backyard was this ten by ten patch of dirt. From the street you could see the tips of sugar cane growing. Who grows sugar cane in their back yard? Ben, Ben grows sugar cane. This made me happy. After the sugarcane came heads of cabbage, bigger than I had ever seen. We made copy cat PF Chang wraps, and with the last harvest of our winter crops came Sneauxmaggedon of 2014 in Baton Rouge. It was during the cold the garden was ready for a new crop and a soil turning. It was certainly too cold do so. So it sat. It sat for months…till Sunday.

I woke up on the wrong side of bed Sunday. Just one of those moods. I had a bad case of the “don’t wants.” I had a bad attitude. I was tired. I couldn’t tell you why, I just was in a mood. I went outside with the soul intention of  letting the dogs out. That garden stared at me as if saying, “Yeah, I know. Today is not my best day either. Want to turn it around for me?” So I did what any rational 30 something would do. I started digging. I could hear myself saying in Dory voice, “Just keep digging, just keep digging.” I was in a bad mood, but I couldn’t let that garden go down like this.

I would dig a hole and then dig another. I would replace the dirt from one hole with the dirt from another. I didn’t know how to turn soil, but this seemed like I good start. Before I knew it, the over-grown garden was ready for it’s crop. I had in turn gotten the best work-out of my life. My legs were burning. My shoulders on fire.

I kept going. I could feel my soul shining. I looked up what seeds I could plant. So I planted. I made a giant herb garden in an old palette. I planted melons, corn, beans. I transplanted my lone tomato plant. I painted some garden markers. Then I moved pavers that were discarded and made a path to the middle of the garden. I felt accomplished. I felt sweat dripping down my back. My legs were covered with dirt and mud. My manicure was destroyed. But I turned that garden around. I made it something more than a patch of dirt. It was about the time that the rain started pouring down that Allman Brothers started playing on my iPod, “Soulshine.”

I walked in and did what any other person in this society would do. I documented my success with a happy caption mistake.

how does your garden grow

What my caption was supposed to say was “Soil Turned…Seeds Sown…Ice on Back.” When I read the caption later as I was instagram stalking everyone else, I thought, “I love this little bit of serendipitous miss-type.” If there was a lesson in any of this I took this away; good day or bad, right side of the bed or not, you have to keep digging till you find the awesome. You have to do what makes your soulshine.

soulshine

“People don’t mind. We all feel this way sometimes. You got to let your soulshine. Shine to the break of day.”

20 snow day / indoor activities to do with your kids

January 27, 2014 by Tiany Davis

It feels wrong writing this post for Baton Rouge Moms, because, well, we dont get snow! At least we don’t normally get snow, unwanted ice on the other hand… we get. With a second bout of #sneauxmageddon on the way,  Louisiana moms are probably starting to feel the wrath of cabin fever sweeping over their homes. A snow day is the perfect time to throw out the to-do list and simply enjoy your children, play with them, have fun with them and make some memories!

20 Indoor Activities to do with Kids

20 snow day activities to do with your kids:

  1. Get out the crafts – Let the kids use their imaginations and create a masterpiece.
  2. Make a fort in the living room out of blankets.
  3. Play Restaurant – Let the kids help in the kitchen for a day – bake cookies, make lunch and dinner together and have them “critique” meals on paper.
  4. Write letters to friends and family or fill out a years worth of birthday cards.
  5. Have a fashion show or photo shoot or better yet, make a photo both and take lots of funny pictures. Making photo props can be fun and allow the creative juices to flow!
  6. Read books.
  7. Put on a puppet show. During Hurricane Katrina, we had our boys put on a play with puppets, or paper dolls. They drew the characters, cut them out, glued them to cardboard and glued a stick on the backside,  fixed a stage out of a large shipping box, wrote a script and put on a play. This entertained them for hours!
  8. Make paper airplanes and have a flying contest.
  9. Cleaning party! Crank up the radio and have a dance party while cleaning the house! Clean, de-clutter and exhaust the kids. It’s a win win!
  10. Skype or FaceTime Catch up with friends and family you haven’t seen in a while or talk to friends fellow  home-bound friends.
  11. Donate – Go through your home with the kids and find items {clothes, toys, appliances} to donate.
  12. Camp out– Create an indoor camp with tents and use the microwave to make s’mores.
  13. Make snowflakes and tape them to the windows.Snow Day Activities
  14. Try to make Origami – this site has tons of great ideas.
  15. Go to the movies at home–  pop some popcorn and catch up on movies you have yet to see or revisit an old favorite.
  16. Puzzles, board games and Charades are always a must on a snow day…try to change things up or make up your own games. Use this Charades generator to get ideas.
  17. Make snow souvenirs! If we get snow, make a bunch of small snowballs. Put them in plastic bags and store them in the freezer until summer. When summertime water fun rolls around, bust out the snowballs!
  18. Decorate the house and get a head start on Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day crafts!
  19. Go through old photos – this always offers plenty of entrainment.
  20. Go play! Bundle up the family for some gold old outdoor play time, even if it’s only ice!

We would love to hear your ideas for indoor activities, please share them in the comments below!
