Six Reasons to Visit the Louisiana Children’s Museum in City Park

August 26, 2019 by Tiany Davis

Baton Rouge families, the Louisiana Children’s Museum opens to the public August 31st and you should start planning your day trip now! We recently had the opportunity to attend a media preview of the LCM, it wasn’t yet complete, yet we felt like we were walking through the most magical of places. It’s going to be something special for Louisiana families, a tactile experience that will delight young and old alike. Every section of the LCM is created to stimulate imagination, creativity and critical thinking in children and families through many inventive and engaging experiences, most importantly PLAY! Every decision made throughout the museum was intricately thought out to help elevate the capacity of our little ones.

Julia Bland, CEO of Louisiana Children’s Museum, spoke beautifully on the importance of childhood, she encouraged us to enjoy and celebrate children where they are and to not make the mistake of wishing away seasons of childhood. The museum has been structured to support parents in their efforts to embrace each stage of development while focusing on literacy, environmental education, health and wellness, STEM, arts, and our rich Louisiana culture.

Why the relocation? The new location allows the museum to better meet the needs of the community as well as improve geographic access and connect children to nature. The attention to detail outside is just as significant as the inside. The Louisiana Children’s Museum will include five new exhibit galleries indoors as well as a literacy center, a parent/teacher resource center, an edible garden, a sensory garden, and full-service café. There are a plethora of reasons to make the day trip to New Orleans to visit the LCM, here are just 6 reasons to start planning your family day trip…

Six Reasons to Visit the Louisiana Children’s Museum

Talk and Play Center

The Talk and Play center is a family-centered space that encourages families to make joyous connections  – connections of children to parents, to grandparents, to life long learning, to growing cycles – the continuums, connections, circles, and cycles that we see in so many parts of our lives.

Play With Me Exhibit

Created for children under the age of four, this ground-floor gallery is designed to provide easy access for parents of young children with strollers. Little ones can explore and play while resources are available to support parents in their journey as children’s first teachers. The Play With Me exhibit includes a fun one of a kind Sensory Lagoon, much like a tiny Lilly Pad water bed for children play on and experience. Play With Me also includes a Cypress Tree Book Nook, Peek-a-Boo Puppet Theater, Early Literacy Sensory Wall and a Discovery Zone.

Louisiana Children’s Museum

Follow That Food

Follow That Food will be one of the largest galleries. It will take children on a playful Louisiana Growing & Gathering food journey that starts in the fields and coastal waters, passes through the busy Ports & Cargo with stops at the Food & You Market, Creole Kitchen, café and finally, makes its way to the family table.

Louisiana Children’s Museum

Dig into Nature

Overlooking the lagoon on the ground floor, this gallery is where children will discover the abundance of natural resources unique to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast Region. Through this tactile and textural set of experiences, visitors will explore the relationships between the diverse resources, ecosystems, plants and animals who live here. The “caring” and “sharing” stations will allow children to bring their own outdoor treasures to examine under massive microscopes and projector. The exhibit also includes Exploration & Innovation, Sedimentation Table, Storytelling Nest, Cajun Pirogue and an amazing Promise Tree Portal.

Louisiana Children’s Museum

Make Your Mark

Entering the second floor, Make Your Mark celebrates New Orleans’ rich art and its architectural, musical, historical and cultural heritage. When children understand and embrace their heritage it invites children to discover how to make their mark with their own original creations.  This is exhibit includes Studio in the Park, Jammin’ House, Jackson Square, NOLA Urban Design Studio, Build Big Dreams, Book Nook & Light Tables and more!

Louisiana Children’s Museum

Move With the River

Move with the River will immerse children in an action-packed wet world of fun where they will begin to explore the story of the Mighty Mississippi River. Families will follow the journey of Louisiana’s most abundant resource, water!

Acorn Café

We’re not done yet, a huge BONUS to your visit to the Louisiana Children’s Museum is the family-friendly Acorn Café! Acorn a Dickie Brennan & Co. Cafe at the new Louisiana Children’s Museum in City Park is the icing on a day of fun exploration. Guests can enjoy a meal indoors or outdoors on the LCM balcony overlooking the lagoon, oaks, and wildlife. The menu is sourced around high quality, local food at an affordable price. The majority of children menu items are $6, and adult entrees range from $6 to $11. Have a little one with a food allergy? No worries! Acorn will be peanut-free and will offer many gluten-free options, including a gluten-free dough for pizzas. Come early or stay late, Acorn will open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with French Truck coffee and pastries served for a morning starter or an afternoon pick me up.

Louisiana Children’s Museum

We can’t wait for you all to visit. The new Louisiana Children’s Museum is breathtaking, but don’t take our word for it, make it a family day trip and plan to visit the new museum in City Park which will open on August 31st.

Learn more about the museum, prices, birthdays and more on the LCM website at LCM.org.

Liberty Lagoon Swim Lessons – Beat the summer heat with BREC

May 5, 2019 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Beat the summer heat and help your children stay safe with LIBERTY LAGOON SWIM LESSONS offered by BREC. Recent news stories of children and even adults drowning this summer have highlighted and reminded us of the importance of water safety. It only takes minutes for a child to slip into a dangerous situation. Louisiana has one of the highest drowning rates in the nation. It’s not just the beach parents need to worry about, it’s the backyard pool as well. Give your child the gift of water safety with swim lessons this summer!

Here are some startling facts on drowning!

  • Child drowning is a silent death. There’s no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.
  • 58 percent of parents do not consider drowning a threat to their children. (Resource ISR)
  • Drowning is the leading cause of death for infants and young children between the ages of 1-4 (CDC)
  • Drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in children aged 1-14 years (CDC)
  • The majority of children who survive (92% percent) are discovered within two minutes following submersion. (Branche 1999)
  • Rates of fatal drowning for minorities are notably higher among these populations in certain age groups. The fatal drowning rate of African American children is 20% higher than that of Caucasian children in the same age range. (CDC)
  • 19 percent of drowning deaths involving children occur in public pools with certified lifeguards present.
  • Nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are males.
  • Drowning can happen quickly and quietly anywhere there is water and even in the presence of lifeguards.
  • Many adults and children report that they can’t swim. Research has shown that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning among children aged 1 to 4 years.

2019 dates for all swim classes can be found below. Space is limited. All programs are first come, first serve.

Knock Knock Children’s Museum: Opening Announcement, Prices & 18 Learning Zones {Video}

July 18, 2017 by Baton Rouge Family Fun

Did you hear the news? The long-awaited Knock Knock Children’s Museum , conceived more than a decade ago, will open to the public at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22! The big announcement was made this morning on Knock Knock Children’s Museum Facebook page with the adorable video below…

Knock Knock Children’s Museum In Baton Rouge

The New Children’s Museum is three stories tall with black sparkly tiles and sits atop six-acres on a hill in BREC’s Brooks-City Park.

The museum’s exhibits are organized in 18 themed interactive learning zones. The exhibits push early literacy, the arts, and science, technology, engineering and math learning through themes.  Children will discover a world full of opportunities in these spaces built just for them…

  • Knock Knock Square: Play a few table top games or work on a floor puzzle. Some days you can enjoy a live play, dance or music performance on our Storybook Stage using the 10 Best Midi Keyboard Controllers of 2017, while you wait here to begin your day’s adventure!
  • Story Tree: The Knock Knock story tree celebrates literacy, sparks imaginations, and finally after replacing exterior door they are able to open doors to countless possibilities. Children can try out their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills under Knock Knock’s story tree canopy!
  • Go Go Garage: My four boys would have loved this zone the most! At the car care center you can dress up like a mechanic, change tires, check oil and design the car of your dreams and even race it!
  • B.R. Star Studio: Dress up for the cameras or dance to your hearts delight.
  • Fish Tales: A true Louisiana pastime, fish the day away and join the Knock Knock fishing tournament.
  • Pelican Pantry: Every child’s favorite play area… children can shop for foods, go on a nutrition scavenger hunt, get behind the register and take home a healthy recipe!
  • I See Food Cafe: The next Food Network Star Kid might get their start in this zone. Kids can cook up some fun as they take your order, prepare a cornucopia of delicious food and serve it up in style.
  • Art Garden: Kids can draw, doodle and play with a wide-range of art media such as paint, fabric, beads and clay. They can also participate in our project of the day!
  • Knock Knock Maker Shop: This is the place for your tiniest creatives! Children can play around with ideas, put things or take them apart, and explore new technologies. There will be a daily design challenge too!
  • Crawbaby: Welcome to da littles swamp! In Crawbaby’s nooks and crannies planned especially for children under the age of 2 years, early learners can drift along on a gently rocking skiff, dress up as a swamp critter or explore a catfish cave and a crawfish hole! They can also climb and slide down an eagle’s nest, hide in the cattails or pose for a picture as a crawfish!
  • Quiet Cabin: Take a break from the playful noises and rest in the rocking chairs on our front porch, feed your baby or read to your child.
  • By You Building: Build a bridge, operate a crane or explore one of Mother Nature’s most powerful forces — the wind — with a wind tunnel!
  • Bubble Playground: What could be better than bubbles and science!?!
  • Paws & Claws Clinic: A zone for kids to love and care for our furriest friends.
  • Geaux Figure! Playhouse: Making math fun with a pyramid of balls or a bridge that doesn’t need fasteners or supports? Kids can use blocks to reconstruct a skyline or create an amazing spinning design with magnetic, interlocking gears.
  • Ship Shape Health Challenge: Ship Shape Challenges will help assess physical fitness with a number of fun challenges.
  • All Hands on Deck!: Take a virtual tour from the Port of Baton Rouge up and down the Mississippi River. Children can power the boat, help a pelican fly and take the wheel while pretending to be the captain!
  • Storybook Climber: The Storybook Climber Learning Zone will let you get a new perspective from high above ground. Imagine climbing through the pages of your favorite book!

Knock Knock Children's Museum

“It is an honor to serve the families and children of the nine-parish Capital Region and beyond. We look forward to welcoming everyone starting August 22, and we can’t wait to see children’s expressions as they take in their children’s museum for the first time,” Peter Olson, Executive Director of Knock Knock Children’s Museum, said.

Have a look inside…

The museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday, with daily admission being $14. Children under 1 will be admitted free. Three family memberships are being offered, ranging in price from $150 to $1,000 annually. Bookings for field trips and birthday parties will begin on Aug. 1, with field trips being available on Oct. 1 and parties on Sept. 1.

Knock Knock for ALL Access Fund

Knock Knock Children’s Museum plans to offer reduced admission to families in need and free field trips to kids in the city-parish’s Head Start program, hoping to knock down barriers that would otherwise prevent any child from experiencing the museum. Those interested in donating to the fund to allow more children in the Capital Area Region experience the life-long benefit of play can do so on the Knock Knock Children’s Museum website.

For more information about the Knock Knock Children’s Museum visit www.knockknockmuseum.org.

A New Orleans Home Away from Home – 1201 Canal Condominiums

April 21, 2017 by Tiany Davis

provide It’s the weekend and many families will be heading down to New Orleans to visit the city as a family, with visitors or possibly a romantic weekend getaway. Living in Baton Rouge offers families a plethora of options for weekend getaways. Many Baton Rouge families visit New Orleans throughout the year and I would venture to guess that visits would be more frequent if there was a permanent residence to go to, a home away from home.  Century21propmgt.com offers you a place that feels like a home while providing hotel-style amenities and an urban living experience, when it came to security it was backed up with locksmith Brooklyn so it was pretty secured, I am really concerned when it comes to home safety and everything that has to do with it. The 1201 Canal Condominiums offer Baton Rougeans just the place, the perfect home away from home.

1201 Canal Condominiums

1201 Canal Condominiums

The 1201 Canal Condominiums are centrally located and nestled within the fully renovated historic Krauss department store. 1201 Canal Condominiums are beautiful inside and out, offering a rooftop pool with the best roof design by Dial One Roofing, and spa overlooking the downtown skyline, 24-hour valet parking, and a professionally-designed fitness center.

1201 Canal CondominiumsRecently transitioned from apartments to luxury condos, 1201 Canal Condominiums have 110 residences ranging from $219,900 to $1,153,900 and are available for purchase at 1201 Canal Street in the heart of downtown New Orleans.

The 1201 Canal Condominiums are perfect for young professionals, families, and empty-nesters seeking a downtown address. Visiting historical monuments in New Orleans is a treat, but imagine owning a piece of history in one of Canal Street’s most renowned landmarks. With the expansion of streetcar lines, the addition of bars and entertainment, and places to call home, upper Canal Street is experiencing the rebirth as the mecca it once was.

1201 Canal Condominiums

The 1201 Canal Condominiums are conveniently located across the street from the Tulane Medical Center, the renovated Joy and Saenger theaters, and the Canal Street streetcar is just outside the front door. The French Quarter and Central Business District are both just a short stroll away.

A second home provides family memories and traditions that will last a lifetime. If you pass on the property from generation to generation, it bestows a benefit that is hard to put a price on. Whether you have a young family or your kids are getting ready to leave the nest, a home away from home might be the perfect New Orleans investment for your family.

What can moms do to help their children at a time like this?

August 23, 2016 by Guest Contributor

Throughout the area, families are dealing with enormous challenges and the stress levels that come along with them. In my role as psychosocial lead for Save the Children, I’m spending time at the shelters working to help families who have no other place to go. The moms I talked to today were worried about so many things that the first thing I wanted to do for them was help them find ways to cope.

I started by really listening to them and acknowledging all the fears and emotions they are dealing with. That went a long way. If you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed, please try to find someone who can do the same for you. And if you can’t, try writing down your feelings, taking a walk, or using other strategies that have worked for you at other stressful times in your life.

Self-care is so important. One of the moms I spoke with today had a young baby and her husband had just been abandoned them after a fight. He had taken the few belongings they had salvaged with him, so the first thing we did was help her find a change of clothes for herself and her child. But then we talked through her other challenges and what she could do to feel calmer and more equipped to start taking them on one at a time.

I connected this lovely woman with some other moms and they quickly offered each other emotional support. Together we discussed how the stress they were feeling as moms could easily transfer to their children. They realized it wasn’t selfish at all to look after themselves, and how important it is for their little ones.

Certainly this is a scary and uncertain time for many children. They look to their parents and caregivers for guidance and reassurance, but sometimes we aren’t sure of the best way to manage. Here are basic ideas I hope can help.

Baton Rouge Moms

10 Tips to Help Kids Cope with Disasters

  1. Limit TV time. Watching television reports on disasters can overwhelm younger children who may not understand an event is being replayed and instead think the disaster is happening over and over again. Overexposure to coverage of the events affects teenagers and adults as well.
  2. Listen to your children carefully. Emotional stress results in part when a child cannot give meaning to dangerous experiences. Begin a dialog to help them gain a basic understanding that is appropriate for their age and responds to their underlying concerns.
  3. Give children reassurance. Let them know that if any emergency or crisis should occur, your primary concern will be their safety. Make sure they know they are being protected.
  4. Be alert for significant changes. Be aware of changes in sleeping patterns, eating habits,
concentration, wide emotional swings or frequent physical complaints without apparent illness. They will likely subside within a short time but if prolonged, we encourage you to seek professional support and counseling.
  5. Expect the unexpected. As children develop, their intellectual, physical and emotional capacities change. Younger children will depend largely on their parents to interpret events, while older children and teenagers will get information from a variety of sources that may not be as reliable. While teenagers seem to have more adult capacities to recover, they still need extra love, understanding and support to process these events.
  6. Give your children extra time and attention. They need your close, personal involvement to comprehend that they are safe and secure. Talk, play and listen to them. Find time to engage in special activities for children of all ages.
  7. Be a model for your child. Your child will learn how to deal with these events by seeing how you deal with them. Base the amount of self-disclosure on the age and developmental level of each of your children. Explain your feelings but remember to do so calmly.
  8. Watch your own behavior. Make a point of showing sensitivity toward those impacted by the disaster. This is an opportunity to teach your children that we all need to help each other.
  9. Help your children return to normal activities. Children almost always benefit from activity,
goal orientation and sociability. Ensure that your child’s school environment is also returning to normal patterns and not spending great amounts of time discussing the crisis.
  10. Encourage your child to do volunteer work. Helping others can give your child a sense of control, security and empathy. In the midst of crisis, adolescents and youth can emerge as active agents of positive change.

We are sharing these tips with parents in the shelters when they bring their kids to our child-friendly spaces. It’s wonderful to see the children play, smile and have fun again, but we all know there is so much more work to be done to help these children and their families bounce back.

If you’d like to support our response and recovery work, please consider donating at www.SavetheChildren.org/Gulf-Floods.

Thank you!
